Cheapest car insurance - Just passed

Hi

I am 29 years old, but turn 30 in February, if I hold out till then will that age bracket make car much insurance cheaper???

I just passed my test and have looked around at insurance and it is sky high as a new driver.

Can anyone recommend a cheap car to insure and a good provider? I just want a banger for the first year anyway.

I am based in BD2 (Bradford)

Any tips are appreciated

Have you tried getting quotes as if you are 30 now (i.e. move your DOB back 3 months) and seeing what the difference is? I'm guessing (but it is just a guess) that what's really going to bring it down is once you've a a year's accident free driving behind you, i.e. get on and start driving as soon as possible. How much are you being quoted at the moment as a 29 year old?

Not really the lack of driving experience and no claims discount factor a lot more, Your postcode also makes
a lot of difference and i know Bradford in one postcode area my own insurers do not quote on.

You will just have to fill in all the online quotes & comparison websites until you think you have
phoned them all, Then search out the few that only advertise in club magazines etc.

When you think youve phoned enough, Phone some more.

What kind of quotes are you getting atm? Then we may be able to indicate if they're relatively reasonable at the moment...
Also have you read martin's guide? Lots of tips there - add a more experienced parent/partner etc...
  • It really is a postcode lottery! I was 25 when I passed at the start of Jan this year (now 26), and moved from Brixton SW London to Surrey just before I got a car. The SW9 postcode would have basically doubled the cost of my insurance (£1400) vs the £700 I paid after i moved.

I added my Dad onto my policy as a named driver, and that reduced the cost of my policy by several hundred £££ too.

I also upped my excess to £500.

Don't pick a car in anything above the old group 4.

When I got quotes, Admiral was always the cheapest.

Admiral's always cheapest for me too. I'm not so sure about the group 4 thing. Groups don't seem to mean very much anymore. I mean, my car is group 7, but I put a quote through for another group 7 car and it was several hundred more expensive.

Another vote for Admiral. My car is group 42  plus declared modifications.
  • Unfortunately, the fact that you live in Bradford won't help - the city has more uninsured drivers than any other in the UK. That, unfortunately for you, makes it less likely that your insurer could recover any losses if you are involved in a no fault accident.

    Oh bloody hell.

Newly qualified driver living in Bradford city centre. I suggest purchasing a large bottle of vaseline before you take out your policy.

Probably cheaper to move than to pay for a year's insurance.

Hell, I once stayed overnight in a Bradford hotel (well, Leeds/Bradford border) and the following morning my car was gone, turned up about 10 minutes down the road with a smashed window, smashed up front and rear bumpers, electrics chopped to pieces, oh and an empty fuel tank because I deliberately didn't fill up before parking there. This was a 7 year old Subaru Legacy. Only time I've ever had a car stolen that wasn't from my home address.

If the car is cheap enough that you wont make a claim on your own policy, Either because you
simply buy another car or fix it yourself, You could set the excess to as much as possible.

Works out cheaper than 3rd party fire & theft cover.

  • Haha thanks guys! Yes Bradford is bad for insurance I know, I am lucky I am not in the BD3 postcode!!! Barkerend is the uninsured driver capital of Britian!

Well I was getting silly quotes at around £2700 which is crazy, my father in law got it down to about £1600, def don't think I'll get for less than that but will have a look around.

Thanks for the tips about the excess fee
