Bt broadband speed

We have option 3 broadband with BT. After very slow speeds they finally sent an engineer out who monitored the speed via his laptop and could see we had been getting speeds of only 596 kbps. After a few tweeks, he called BT and had the cap removed from our line saying we should get up 15meg, but realistically should expect 13meg. We waitied the 10 days and used the website he loaded on the pc to check speeds. This is not a BT site. He said all their engineers use it. We have only been getting 3.5 - 5.5 and still can't watch youtube very well. BT asked me to use their speed checker and it says we are getting 11.5 and won't send an engineer to recheck things. They say the engineer shouldn't use the website he gave us. So i googled a speedchecker and it gave the same results 3.5 - 5.5. Has anyone had the same from BT? Why don't I get the speeds they promise?

You need to look into your router to find out what rate the router is synching with to the exchange, what your line attenuation is and the noise.
If you are re-booting the router a few times every day for whatever reason, the BT system will drop your speeds to find a stable connection, as it thinks there is a problem.
If their connection says 11.5 then it probably is.
If you have a DECT phone/basestation close to the router, move it as far away as possible, as it can interfere with the broadband signal.
You also need to check your speeds at various times of the day as you will get different results according to the amount of traffic through the exchange.
For best results when you are testing, use a wired connection to your computer rather than wireless.0 -
You don't say what speedtest site you are using?
Try www.speedtest.net
And post your router stats:

treecol,
You need to put your phone number in here http://www.btwholesale.com/pages/static/Community/Broadband_Community/Coverage/ADSL_Availibility_Checker.html# and that will tell you what speed your line can handle.
When I went to get O2 BBand installed, they told me I could get 17Mb but I know for a fact,I can only get 6Mb!! What you posted above ,I got all the time when I worked for Sky BBand in the Tier 2.Salespeople saying you can get this speed when in fact, most of the time, you can only get a fraction of the speed.
That's why it pays to do your research before you sign up.If I didn't,I'd be paying for a speed I cannot & never will get.0 -

When it comes to LLU services don't you need to take into account the different equipment used by different companies at the exchange? Don't O2 offer ADSL2+ which means that they probably can give a faster speed than BT would say?0 -

When I checked mine the difference between ADSL & ADLS2 wasn't all that great, only a Mb or 2 faster.
This is the result for my line;Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a fixed line speed up to 2Mbps.
Our test also indicates that your line currently supports an estimated ADSL Max broadband line speed of 5.5Mbps.
Speedtest show's I am getting 6.2Mb down & 1Mb up.
When a customer would ring up complaining of slow speeds, first thing I'd do is run a line test to see what speed they'd get.Sales as a rule try to sell you the most expensive product. So people would buy a 10Mb package but their line would be set up for 3Mb because that's all the line could give them.0
