Hi, was just wondering if anyone has any experience of using Ubuntu as opposed to Windows?
I have a friend that has just gone from Windows to Ubuntu, they are using the internet via a Vodafone Broadband Dongle and they are finding the credit is being eaten much faster since switching to Ubuntu. Before the switchover £15 credit would last for quite some time but now it's all gone in about 2/3 days ??
Anyone have any experience with this or tips on Ubuntu in general?
Thanks

It's nothing to do with the operating system. Maybe tell your friend to buy some sort of package where they get 1Gb of usage or 2Gb.0

I thought that myself, I couldn't see how the system would make much difference, but it just seems strange that on Windows £15 credit would often last over a week, but since going to Ubuntu the same credit with the same usuage only lasts 2/3 days
But I do agree that it would be financially better NOT to be using a dongle and get a proper connectionCARPE DIEMaut viam inveniam aut faciamBe sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour0 -
Could it be that automatic updates are turned on on Ubuntu and it's downloading large files in the background. Do they have any other software which is running on their PC which connects to the Internet?0
-
Yep - my suggestion would be the auto updates, especially soon after installing or using a new release.0

Whilst it checks for updates automatically I don't think it automatically downloads them unless you set it to. Its not selected by default.0

Definitely agree, unless you set it to do so, yes it will check if there are updates (a few kB traffic and only once per day/week/never) and even so I just installed NRM(Meerkat and whatever they now call NRM on that) and it took 113MB to update when I asked it to.4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . It might be "Ubuntu One" service...
it's a cloud storage service which is installed and runs by default.

Ubuntu is a fairly decent Linux distribution, but Mint is probably a far better choice for the recent Windows convert.0 -

erm ... i'm not really sure what programs are used, the laptop is mainly used to access the internet with IE, if that helpsCARPE DIEMaut viam inveniam aut faciamBe sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour0 -
I installed Ubuntu 10.10 (in VMWare as it happens). It's 1st update of patches was easily 250Mb; you can switch off automatic downloads in Update Manager.0
