I know this is kinda OT, but I had two hillarious idiots trying to return stuff over the past couple of days.

One person tried to return a 50" 3D tv because when she watched a blu ray on it, it was shown in cinemascope and thus had borders at the top and bottom of the screen. I pointed out that most studios make the film that way, so release it that way on dvd/blu ray so you're seeing the whole picture of the film.

"I disagree!" she spouted, "at the cinema I don't get borders!"

me: at the cinema, the screen IS that shape.

her: I disagree! I don't buy TVs in this day and age to NOT get the full effect!

I didn't take the tv back.

The other numpty yesterday accused our install engineers of breaking their dvd recorder when they installed the TV they'd bought from us.

Now, during the process I learnt that they never use the recorder so they don't know WHAT'S wrong with it other than it doesn't work. They were cross that the engineer left it "without the time" which I pointed out was because the engineer left the recorder switched on...the customer switched it off to get the time back.

I asked if they'd tried using it since switching it off. "No", they said, "We don't use it ever. We haven't touched it since the engineer left."

So they're accusing us of breaking something they've never used, never intend to use (other than as a clock) and are certain it doesn't work when...erm....they've never used it.

I said I'd send out an engineer to check the cables were installed correctly, but if it was set up correctly and they just don't know what they're doing, we'll charge for the callout, especially as they didn't even buy the recorder from us. At that point they said if they get charged, they're taking us to court. :rotfl:
  • Years ago I took a video back to Asda because they'd put a 4:3 tape in a widescreen box. I gave up attempting to explain there were portions of the picture missing on a 4:3, she thought that because a widescreen picture had black strips above and below on a 4:3 TV this meant bits of the picture were missing...

In some cases, I've seen 4:3 versions of a movie where the extra top and bottom bits of the image that weren't on the widescreen version expose the special effects, or booms or other production gaffes. But yeah, nothing of note is added if the film is condensed to 4:3 but films like Lawrence of Arabia loses a huge amount when chopped down. But hey, at least there are no borders.

Hi, hoping someone can help, bought an Ipod docking station for a present for my son, wasn't good enough so took it back to change not realising they had a 28 day returns policy, now won't even exchange it and senior manager was quite rude to me, told me to ring complaints and if they agreed to exchange he would, rang complaints and she was even ruder, was like speaking to Vicky pollard, @no we can't' must have said it 50 times! Is there anything I can do , i know it's not their fault but for an exchange I can't see the problem, was 4 days over but did telephone the weeke before to say was taking it back but their is magically no record of this in store else would have been in time!! PLEASE HELP WITH ADVICE!!

    Hi tami1972,

My name’s Glenn and I’m from Comet.

I was sorry to read from your post that you had experienced problems returning a docking station to your local Comet store.

Although I can see you are aware we offer a 28 day returns period for unwanted and unopened products that are taken back to a store within this period you did state that you contacted us one week before this expired. Sometimes we are able to trace calls therefore, if you email me on the link below with your details I would like to look into this further for you to see if there is anything we can do.

  • One thing i would like to point out, especially to do with comet and other related/similar shops. is that from payday novemeber, do NOT expect much in terms of customer service guys manners.

This is no digs to them, but the sheer amount of crap they get bombarded with in the christmas period is so so bad, it almost warrants danger pay. We had the nicest guy ever on customer service when i worked there, but as soon as the christmas shopping period arrived he looked and felt like he wanted to take up stomping puppies as a hobby. Some of the things people try to get away with around this time is absolutley ridiculous. One dude actually ended up trying to kick down a security door in order to get a replacement for a product he had destroyed in anger, and thought he deserved a refund for.

I can't believe that someone would have the nerve to buy a sat nav and then take it back after the weekend.

It would never have occurred to me.

Unfortunetely you had no chance. Even if it was 1 hour old, like my TV, they dont want to know if you have opened it. This allows for salesmen to manipulate you into what to buy, even if it doesnt fit your needs. As long as there is not a fault, it doesnt matter if you are mis-sold it, or it is a poor quality product. Yes, Comet customer service, is the rudest I have ever come across. In my experience, even if you have a fault, they will try to blame neglect, so the year guarentee is worth zip. They are set up with all testing equipment at the desk, to try and prove you wrong about faults. This is a nightmare on intermittant faults. I have had problems with a Samsung camcorder, that they tried to say was dropped, but I saw an independent engeneer, who said it was a fault on that model, that they would not finalise Sony Disks. I felt like punching the customer service people, but deep down I know its the policy of the store. Probably manager bonuses depend on how many products they can refuse to take back. On the other hand, I had very good experiences with Jessops, Tesco's and Asda. Simple answer -

Never Never buy anything from Comet. Comet Aintree Merseyside certainly have the rudest Staff, and they will try anything to say a fault is neglect from what I have heard and experienced.

BTW I never did get my camcorder fixed. They tested it with TDK discs and said it worked. No chance of refunding the £25 pounds worth of Sony Disks they sold me without an engeneers report. I wish now I'd have got one and taken them to court.
