Comet 28 day returns Policy

Hi, hoping someone can help, bought an Ipod docking station for a present for my son, wasn't good enough so took it back to change not realising they had a 28 day returns policy, now won't even exchange it and senior manager was quite rude to me, told me to ring complaints and if they agreed to exchange he would, rang complaints and she was even ruder, was like speaking to Vicky pollard, @no we can't' must have said it 50 times! Is there anything I can do , i know it's not their fault but for an exchange I can't see the problem, was 4 days over but did telephone the weeke before to say was taking it back but their is magically no record of this in store else would have been in time!! PLEASE HELP WITH ADVICE!!

  • There's no excuse for any of their staff being rude, but I'm afraif that there is nothing you can do if they won't accept it back.
Any store is allowed to state their own conditions for change of mind returns (provided it was a face to face purchase) and as you were outside the 28 days they allow, they can refuse to refund or exchange it.

If there is nothing wrong with it then it is entirely their discretion. You have no legal right to return it if there is nothing wrong with it which I assume is the case

  • I'm surprised that Comet offer as much as 28 days.

I'd have thought they'd only offer 14 days at best.

I'm surprised in this day and age they offer any return period.
  • thanks for the positive replies, was just the rudeness of staff when there is no need to be., and yes they should have some return period as presents are often duplicated or not the right one as in my case, my downfall was buying early!!

Well thats the fault of the buyer then? I have noticed an ever increasing number of larger stores now not taking returns.
    Back by no demand whatsoever.

It's a trend that has been creeping in for a while now. Retailers, by and large, are having to reduce costs and refunds for unwanted products present a very big expense that they have no need to take on. Others are simply fed up of being treated like hire shops - a retailer I used to work for banned the return of DJ equipment for that reason.

It's always Sat-navs for me. But people bring them back a few days later, saying "It's faulty...it loses signal after about an hour". Of course, I can't test that..but I do look in the last destinations and find it's been used to go to London or somewhere.

Back on topic, I probably would return an unwanted item just outside the 28 days, unless there was a good reason - for example, a clearance item we had now sold through. I'd draw the line at something older than that, though.

If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

I had no problem returning an item the other day.
Just got back from there, efficient service, no need to have a haranging match or shout, straight swap.
Just because it is the wrong colour does not mean that the numptie can return the said trinket

Or was it I has red the Martin Inns LawYers forum and I nose me rites, I demand you replace its attitude!

We get the same crap at Maplins. Buying DJ stuff on a Friday and then suddenly its bought back on Monday with a fault. It really gets on my nerves.

Some stuff though we return to head office as they can test it for an hour and then if its found ok its sent back to the customer saying its fine.
