I'd use torn up rags...old tights, clothes that are too worn even for the charity shop, trimmings from making the actual covering, old holey jumpers, old pillow inners, old bits of duvet rolled up. Don't use rice or other foodstuff...they will get damp and go mouldy. If you really don't want to use rags buy a couple of pillows out the ££ shop and use the stuffing from these.

Seconded!!!! Any sort of bits of fabric, stuff that 'flumps' - erm has a bit of weight is probably what I mean - when it's cut up, like old jeans or t-shirts is better than fluffy light stuff, as it sits better against the door and the floor.

...another reason I'd not use anything edible is that it might attract mice or rats (they could probably smell it against the door from the outside!)

Thank you. I would use rags but don't have any! Think I shall buy some pillows from the pound shop 2moro :) do you know where I can buy lavender from? The washer hole is extremely draughty so that sounds a great idea!

Some cheap lavendar soap is a good substitute. Or any other scent of soap for that matter, or some pot pourri oil.

Ive got an old bed set that will match my new living room colours. Thinking of making two chunky draught excluders from this bedset, but what do I stuff them with?

Is it better to rip up some material and stuff this in, or better to use some leftover wadding material? Again, should this be chunked up or 'rolled' into shape?

Trying to be MSE with the least amount of effort lol x

I'm glad you asked this - I've been thinking of doing the same but I wanted something a bit heavier to go inside it. The cheap ones I've bought in the past have been quite light and seem to roll away from the door fairly easily so I want something that going to stay put and be dog proof.
So I'm also up for any MSE ideas.

I made my own a few weeks ago and filled it with the wading from an old pillow. I have to keep it in place with a couple of shoes as it is too light to stay in place.

An idea I have since had was to bag some sand and lie that in amongst the wadding some how. I definately remember my grandmas draught excluders being heavy

I tend to buy very cheap pillows and replace them regularly (rather than buy expensive ones) so when they go flat I take the wadding from inside and use that for draft excluder's. It works quite well and if you want them to be a bit heavier then just put more in.

    EDIT

I've also noticed that they can still be quite light. I was thinking about using some grains. You know like those hot grain things you put into the microwave

I was thinking about stitching and extra panel that goes lengthways inside the draft excluder from one end to the other with some stitches going across to stop the grains from tipping to one end or the other.

Something along these lines. haven't tried it yet though

I remember making these as a kid, we shredded old scraps of material, it makes it chunky and nice and heavy.

    I like that idea serious_saver :)

Loving the 'heavy' ideas, from value rice to shoes!

If I get the cleaning done I will make a start on it this weekend, but if anyone has more hints and tips, please let me know :)
