Hello all, our Virgin 'bundle' is due to expire in early Feb. We do not have HD tv's (but may just have 1 main hd tv downstairs soon-standard tvs upstairs) & would like to keep the 2 extra boxes for upstairs tvs (just plain boxes needed-not virgin + etc). Where I live there is NO freeview reception (yet). We do like the virgin + freeze/record tv facility & do use the catch-up facility a lot so would not want to lose this. Our phone use is minimal-maximum £5 a month. Broadband use-mainly surfing-occaisional download of films up to 4 gig -occiaisional music downloads, no on-line gaming etc . We would maybe consider moving down a tv package-sticking block is my G/F who is obsessed with the Good Food Channel! We never pay for extra films, premium content etc or use music on demand.
Below is our current deal. I'm trying to 'spring clean' our finances as I've just got a job (yipee!!!!!!!) & we want to get the best we can....so if any of you good folk from MSE can advise???We've been happy with Virgins Service so far! Is it too early to try & ring retentions? If so what other deal should we quote to try & barter down prices? Any help would be fab!

£60 a month for phone/TV/boadband? Yikes! Dump VM in Feb, get a Freesat PVR, switch to 02 Phone and broadband (if available LLU) and save about £40pm?
You won't get the GF channel though.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Thanks Macman...we don't get freeview here unfortunately (other side of the valley does)-shame as i have a freeview pvr from old house! A bit loathe to spend £100+ on aerial as house is rented....also the 2 extra boxes upstairs-difficult to do with freeview even if a new aeriel put up-as more expense to put aeriel sockets in the walls.

Speak to Sky and see if they can offer a better deal for what you are getting. You would still have a certain amount of catchup with Sky Anytime (plus all of Virgins Catchup services are available on the specific channels websites which is just as good quality wise)
Failing this, you could just ring virgin now and see if they can improve your service or reduce your bills in any way.
    Good Luck:)

    I didn't mention Freeview, I suggested Freesat.

  • Thanks Macman/Davehughes! Macman-my apologies......will look into freesat PVR. On the best places to get dish/PVR etc?

Humax Foxsat HDR PVR is the one to go for, look at Richer Sounds. Any local satellite installer will do the dish, twin feed and install for around £80-100. Or DIY for about £30.

I posted this on another thread.

My 12 months contract has just expired so I called Virgin on Monday to see what they could do for me. I am currently on the following:-

    M+ TV
    2 x V+ boxes
    XL Telephone
    L Broadband.

They informed me that my price of £50.99 including line rental could not be imporved upon so I asked to be oput throught to cancellations.

The chap, who was very polite and helpful told me that I already was. When I explained that I had been looking around at other deals from other providers he said if I could get something better then I should take it. He even confirmd that he had put me on the 30 day notice period without me confirming that i wanted to. I thereofre left it and thought I would try again another time.

I got a call last night from a chap who was equally helpful and asked what he could do to keep me. I played hard ball for a while and he left me with some options to consider. I called back today to see what else I could get and have now agreed the following:-

    XL TV
    2 x V+ boxes
    XL Telephone
    L Broadband

£37.19 per month fixed for 18 months. I also got a £30 credit for month 1 and a new Home Hub.

I am pretty pleased with that.

I think the key is to actually cancel and give your 30 days notice and then wait for the call back from retentions. They seem to be offering more than when you originally call to cancel or negotiate. And make sure you get an email comnfirming the deal.
