While I can't answer your question, before signing up with Tiscali do read up on problems with this company, who receive more complaints than any other ISP in UK, regarding download limits.
If you just e-mail & visit a few websites you should be fine, but if you download even a little during evenings, or play a few games in the evening, you may well be accused of exceeding reasonable useage & have your connection speed cut in half. This company seem to have a very bad reputation in many ways, while they claim unlimited it seems to be anything but...0 -
Colinw,
To answer your Question. I believe that the modem they send you is the only option.
Take a look at http://www.tiscali.dslshop.co.uk/ , this is their shop. They charge for anything else by the looks of things.
Just to balance the view of alikat. I have been with Tiscali from the days they took over Lineone, the days of dialup. No problems then.
I upgraded to 1mb broadband in the summer on the cheap £12.99 package , as dialup was costing me £15.
I had no trouble installing the hardwear or software they gave. I do not know what experiances you whould have a your own modem/router.
I have used up to 29mb a month to download files, p2p and emails. I have not had a fairusage email yet, but I do do the downloading of p2p outside the hours they don't like you to do it of 6pm to 11pm. I have used it outside these hours right up to 6pm and had no problems.
Saturdays/Sundays times are slightly different, but not sure on these, as I do not tend to download then.
I must admit, I am , as they say , "3 good stone's throw" from the exchange , so I do get a very high speed usually right up to the 1mb limit.
All I am saying they can be a pain in the A*** to some people, but I have never had any problems with them so far. I must admit it may change in the future but that can happen to any company.
hope this is of help.

Thanks for the replies. I have read good and bad about this company but that seems to be the same with most of the companies eho do broadband. My other other options are Primus who seem to have a good package with their discounts and eclipse which I only became aware of over the last couple of days but they also look quite good. So many options though! I might plump for Primus in the end and they seem to have the least negative comments. I was even tempted by AO hell because of the free wireless router but not sure as I will not be able to use vpn with them.
