Indeed, even Fiat themselves have said that they wished they didn't make cars in Italy..;)

Funny I thought that but decided not to say it, but nw the cat is out th bag.

OP ..........buy a current shape Panda now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Personally I like the 1.2 engine, it is a great wee unit and you can shuffe the car on and it is great fun to drive. I'm sure some will correct me if I'm wrong but I think it also one of the few engines that if the cambelt goes there is no interference between valves and pistons so that is an added bonus.
  • VW Fox, im my opion the biggest small car, which comfortably seats four people with lugage, for trips 8 hours long!

Fiat Panda has to be better than the Kia Picanto, 7 year warranty or no warranty. We recently rented one and it was just horrible to drive and even for a tiny tick, totally underpowered.

  • The Hyundai i10 is very small, especially width wise and I was pushed up against the window (not a lard !!! either !). The i20 has renowned design faults in the height of the pedals and the clearance between your right leg and the plastic under the steering wheel .It could stop you braking ! I tried it out and walked away - designed by monkeys me thinks.

I was also going down the route of a cheaper new car being better (for me) than the second hand older car.

I've gone around this conundrum for months and what I come back to is that you cannot trust the bloke selling you the car as a private sale and you have zero comeback. Go around garages and you meet all kinds of spivs and charlatans and though there are decent blokes out there, they are hard to find. That pushed me to the car supermarkets and I've been following prices for the Qashqai, Focus and Fiesta quite a lot and a few others periodically. If only down to me I'd be in a Merc E class about 5 years old but too big for the missus.

I'm not a mechanic and I know little about cars but a second hand car from a supermarket surely gives you the sales of goods act as some back up and they have somewhat of a reputation to protect. The other thing is that many of their low mileage cars are motability (you can ask) and though some say that is a negative, low mileage and fully serviced whilst owned by some old fuddy duddy might be better than an average bet. That is what I'm going to do I'm almost certain.

Anyway, that is my logic and though the Qashqai is the vehicle I want, I may have to go for a cheaper one at the moment and that would steer me to the Focus as the Fiesta was a new model in 2008 and prices are still too high.

OP, you or someone around you would appear to have decent mechanical knowledge, if you've had a faithful car for 12 years- I keep mine for around similar as well, but there's plenty who don't.
Why not look at second-hand? You'd find a car surely that would fit your needs better, especially if you're planning it as a long-term car. For a cheaper price too.
Some of the best cars I've owned have been in the £600 mark!

Depends what you expect from a 1.0 I guess - I pick up my brand new Picanto next week and it's not the worst or slowest small car I've ever driven, preferred it to the Panda too after driving both.

Can't argue with £5550 OTR either really.

Nice choice because the new 1.2 Euro V engine is far better than the 1.1 it replaced. :T
