Such a shame when someone like this is just over the threshold. I'm sorry I don't have any advice. Just that Macmillan were very good in helping my mum when she got cancer, telling her what she was entitled to. She is just above the threshold to get pension credit, so got about £12 petrol money each time she had to go to the hospital (84 miles a day). She also got a one-off payment for something - was about £200.

I know it's not ideal but is there not hospital transport. I know it's much easier going by car as the hospital transport can take all day as they have to pick up and drop off other patients too. They'd probably be better off just taking the bus rather than hospital transport - but I know it's better travelling in the comfort of your own when undergoing treatment. Don't they have any family or friends who could take turns in taking them?

I've just had a look on the Macmillan page. It says that if you have less than £100 per person per week to live on after your bills are paid, and have less than £6000 in savings then you could be referred for a grant.

I'm surprised Macmillan have said that they couldn't help.

I'm surprised as well the grants can be given for a lot of things, Maybe they can ask to see a different adviser?

It would probably be worth it.

Did they get someone to come and visit them at home?

    thanks jackieb & mickbhall

no one daughter who works & thats it
he has infirmities & hip replacement she is really bad with Rheumatoid arthritis so public transport out.
anyway its 8 buses & out all day.
the hospital transport would have them out from 8 till 6.30 but treatment is only 10-20 mins max.

he is managing to drive & get back in for the aftrnoon its just that with heir given health & diagnosis, seems a shame they cant get help with cost
that would alleviate the hassle a bit

Please try Macmillan again. I used to take my mum in for her treatments, and i'm not in my 70's or having chemo or radiotherapy, and I got tired, so goodness knows how they're feeling.

I know it's not ideal but would he consider staying in hospital during the week and go home at the weekends? It would save him driving in the winter. Has he asked the hospital if there's any help available?

btw it is very nice of you to come up with all this help but
they have been through all the thoughts youve mentioned.
all they need is a wee bit financial input to recover loss incurred
    by his cancer diagnosis.
    they deserve it
i just wish they could have travel reinmbused.
    they wont fight for themselves

Depending on their income they could try applying for a HC1 form from the NHS, you can usually get the forms at pharmacies

(put the www in front of it - won't let me post links yet)
Only after the last tree has been cut down,
Only after the last river has been poisoned,
Only after the last fish has been caught,
Only then will you find that money cannot be eaten
