contents insurance and making a claim

If you make a claim on you contents insurance for accidental damage and you are turned down do you lose your no claims discount even though you didnt get the claim

  • You haven't claimed. You only inquired about a claim. I would be very surprised if this affected your NCD.

    Unfortunately I would disagree with the above poster.

    When applying a no claims discount, insurers commonly ask about "claims, accidents and losses".

    As you have had a loss / claim that you have reported to your insurer it will be recorded as such even though you did not pursue it or recieve any payment.

    You would need to declare this to any future insurers. It may not affect your premium too much as you did not actually claim for anything but to keep yourself right I would let them know about the incident.

    Different insurers have different criteria but it's always best to disclose all material facts.
  • Many insurers will get claims information from the Claims Underwriting Exchange administered by Experian when you apply for a policy or at a later stage, so it could depend on what information your current insurer passes on. However, it's unlikely to affect your current NCD and I think you could argue with any future insurer who might question its affect on your NCD as you are in receipt of no benefit from this claim.
