handset scam?

I received a call today saying as I'm a Virgin customer I'm entitled to a replacement handset. Firstly I don't think I am as I'm on pay as you go, they said it's a benefit I'm entitled to as a Virgin customer. What concerns me is they kept asking me to confirm my postcode, but the one they were giving wasn't the one registered with Virgin. The postcode is an alternative address I use but Virgin aren't aware of the postcode they were giving. Any ideas?

Yes. They are probably an organisation called philanthropists-r-us.com whose mission statement is to give free handsets away for no personal gain.
Or maybe not! Look, if someone rings you up and offers you something free, remember the wooden horse of Troy and beware of Greeks bearing gifts.
When you want a new handset, let it be at your time of choosing. If in doubt, ring Virgin and ask if it is one of their offers.0 -
Thanks, I have contacted Virgin as well and am waiting for a reply. I doubt if it was from them as the postcode they were quoting was one they are not aware of. They probably just got my details from somewhere and have a way of finding out which phone company the number is for. Told them I wasn't bothered about having a new handset!0

Have had a call from Virgin, not surprisingly the call was nothing to do with them!0
