Adding 17yo daughter to car insurance

  • The only way my 17 yr old daughter could get insurance was to go to a broker. Even then it was £100 a month 3rd party fire and theft on a Ford Ka! The best thing to do is let them start their own insurance policy and build up no claims, my daughter is now 20 and her insurance is down to £35 a month fully comp.
Politicians and diapers have one thing in common. They should both be changed regularly, and for the same reason.

Cant help I'm afraid but its no wonder that so many lads drive round with no insurance, to get DS (18) added onto ours which I know is a big car, was a shocking £8900 for which we pay just under £300, and to get him his own car we looked at a 1.1 Fiat Panda and the quotes were £3000 plus!
Mortgage, we're getting there with the end in sight £6587 07/23, otherwise free of the debt thanks to MSE help!
  • Thank you for all your input :T

I followed advice on here and got more quotes. I was then having tea with three of my frineds who have all had to insure cars for their 17yos recently, and they all recommended Direct Line. I'd never used them before, as they were always expensive, but they came up trumps this time; I've got fully comp, protected NCB, £450 excess, and hire car in case ours is stolen or written off, for £842 :j:j:j It's still a lot of money, but not as much as it might have been.

DD will now be driving our car from next week

    Thanks again :A

We changed one of our cars on Wed (the one the kids are all insured on) the insurance was already up for renewal on old car at £625 fully comp but no protected ncb./courtesy car. New car was same insurance group but a few years newer, and they quoted £1335:eek::eek::eek: by the Co op.
I ran a few comparision sites and eventually got fully comp, protected ncb, and courtesy car with a £250 excess for £600 via Aviva. So it really does pay to shop around.

I see my post about being on ignore has been removed, not quite sure why? it was obvious o me because mine is the only post which has not been thanked by the op, despite it containing a good suggestion to her question.

And they charge the 17 lads double!!!

Criminal and something needs to be done, insurance companies have been getting away with it for far too long now.

But how many times do you need to read that 17 year old lads are the worst risk and have the most accidents and that is why insurers charge them more.

Would you rather have your cover doubled or trebled and everyone pays the same?
  • We are with Aviva 2 lads 19 and 21 on policy as second drivers. They are both at uni £77 a month. fully comp class a insurance.

How many times have you read in similar threads that the insurance comapanies are making thousands using that excuse now, worked out based on figures quoted by posters who work in the insurance business?

Thanks for that-dd will be 17 in a year, so this is already on my radar.

In terms of unbelievable premiums, my father (77) was just looking at quotes to add me to his car insurance.

I'm 43 next month, with 22 years of driving experience and no claims or convictions ever.

But to add a middle aged plodder like me: £300!
