Adding 17yo daughter to car insurance

Options
Good morning, I hope someone can assist with my query :)

My car insurance is coming up for renewal and for DH and I to drive fully comp, we've been quoted a renewal premium of £277. It's a 1250cc Fiesta, basic model.

DD started learning to drive in the summer, and when I add her, the lowest quote I get through Go compare is £1355

I've increased the excess from £200 to £500, but that makes no difference.

I'm not keen to move to 3rd party as the car is less than 5 years old.

Any suggestions :A TIA

  • Good luck but you will seriously struggle to get it under £1000.

Just gone through the same exercise on a 2003 Hyundai Getz 1.1 with twins girls (19) one has passed her test and the other still learning. Got it for £500 last year and cheapest I have been able to get this year is £900 if I pay it up front !! £1300 if I pay monthly (figure that one out), but as they are Uni we've decided to take them off. Just renewed for £240 for us parents only. That is after an extra years no claims (currently over 10 years) with the kids on the policy.

I read all the posts about £120 paid out in claims for every £100 received but at this rate it just does not stack up. Unfortunately claim culture for every bump is biting us big time now. Another expense to factor in.

I agree the cost is dreadful. Have you tried Endersleigh? they are specialist young driver insurers. Also a lot of companies are stopping doing 3rd party ploicies as it is not cost effective.

As I mentioned on another thread it might be worth considering getting an older (therefore cheaper to insure) small run about, let's your DD start building up her own NCB too which will make a huge difference to policy prices next year and you could insure TPFT if it was a cheaper car

My friend bought a car for their child 1.1 micra for £400 insured it for £600 which then was cheaper than her insurers wanted to add her to the Picasso she owns. Own policy, no risk of them effecting Mum's insurance if they have a bump etc

My partner is 30 but because of his choice of car we pay £940 which is just shocking as he's been driving for years
One day I might be more organised...........

I used swiftcover. I went from £200 for my micra to £1500. I had a claim within 2 1/2 weeks and I also have a crumpled bonnet currently held on with cable ties. It has to be worth the best insurance you can afford. My daughters are 20 & 22 so their not exactly boy racers but thats my 2 year old car completely transformed in the space of 3 months. I haver covered part of the increase in my insurance but they each pay me £10 a week as a contribution.

  • Thank you for all the repllies so far :)

Can I ask who that's with, please?

I've just called Tesco, who I'm currently with. Premium has gone up from £256 to £3091 to add DD. Is there a falling over in shock smilie :o

I am seriously tempted by that :)

You think £1300 it tough for a <5 year old car NOT on 3PFT???

    Mine was £1500 - 3PFT, on a 1991 1.1 Ford Fiesta with a value of £300....

PenPen if you want to go down that route buy the car for both of them to use maybe? There is 2 years between her children and ones just bought his own so 18yr old brother (wasn't interested at 17) can use the 'family car' it's come in handy as Mum uses it on her third party on other cars if hers is being fixed, is going out in the snow (mirca just seems to glide over it and she's not worried about damaging it) etc so it's been a worthwhile purchase for them.

Do price up insuring one before buying of course, it's rare now that adding Mum/Dad reduces price, they just base it on the most at risk (hence I hate DP being on mine!)

I have used both Aviva and Direct line for my sons. I found they were more reasonable then the companies on gocompare. I have three sons on mine at a cost of £650 this year with Aviva. They are typical 'boy racer' age at 20, 21 and 24

PP - have you tried searching on add on insurance? We looked at putting SS1 on mine, but it was short term top up insurance for learner drivers, not stand alone insurance for the car. His mother then bought him a runaround, and we insured it provisional at £650 via Quinn Direct early part of this year. Good luck with it.
