Buying Carpet beware of the cost of the accessories.

We had an interesting experience this week at CarpetRight. We went in to get a quote for some new carpet for our stairs and landing and was told it would be £400 all in. We weren't sure on the colour so went home to check and have a think about it. We went back last night to order the carpet and found out they had an additional 10% of the carpet - result we thought and set about ordering it. They did a new quote and told us the balance would be £420. How could this be with the extra 10% discount? Well they had decided to increase the cost of the gripper rods from £50 odd quid to nearer £75 - this is a 50% increase in the cost in a matter of a few days. BE WARNED - the deals and discounts are very misleading as you think you are getting a good deal but they make the money back by increasing the cost of the accessories! If we hadn't had the earlier quote we would have been none the wiser! We decided not to go with the carpet and are going to try to find a local dealer without all the flashy offers!

Thats true!
We have been trying to find carpet for our house. We've worked it cheaper to buy a good quality underlay and grippers etc online for a fraction of the price the carpet shop would charge and then just order the carpet from the shop!0 -
Thats how they make there money on the extras, I wouldn't even use a chain myself but local store they have more to loose if they mess up0

That's true.
I used my local family independent store in my village. They quoted me for a carpet for my one bed ground floor flat. When I got the quote it was £1000! I couldn't believe it was so high since the flat is tiny, I can literally vacuum the whole flat without unplugging the hoover in one room, the wire reaches all parts it's that small! When I read the quote they had added things like "Stairs and Landing fitting charge £200". When I said, I dont even have stairs or a landing, they said it was standard charge they charge everyone when getting a whole property done as most people do and they couldn't remove it!!
Needless to say, I didn't buy from them!0 -
I went to a local store for a stairs and bedroom carpet, the fitting and extras was all inclusive nothing else to pay. I paid around £700 for a British wool carpet which did stairs, large landing (size of a small room) and one medium sized bedroom. So included were griper rods, and 4 of those things that goes to edge of the doors0

Carpet gripper is about 5p per foot.
Therefore six 12x12 rooms cost £15 in grippers.

Just buy your own underlay and grippers/door bars online. They sell the carpet cheap and then put a huge mark up on the extra-standard practice. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

i bought a carpet from a local independent retailer and paid £13.00 pm, carpetright had the exact same stuff 'on sale' at £14.00 pm - that told me enough to steer clear:silenced:0

As a fan of Carpet Right , will go along with all that has been said , do your sums , get the total cost of the job , then make a considered choice.
But Carpet Right .. bottom line price beats any Independent near us.0 -
ask any carpet fitter what they think of carpetright even the ones who work for them , that's all i'm saying0

What happened to all the decent carpet shops selling roll ends and offcuts? Carpet right end of rolls are similar priced the same
as it is off the roll. I had bought from allied carpets many moons ago, Roll ends were a massive saving compared to roll prices.
Even bought a 22'x15' foot roll end once. Seems you cannot get it wider than 12/13ft now not from stock anyway.
I went to a couple of smaller outlets but limited choice, I ended up back at carpet right for an extra £3 i chose the exact
colour i wanted.
Try B&Q oh my, I have never felt so harassed in my life. They had already visited my neighbour and not me by mistake without
even making an appointment. When i asked about moving furniture he said they cannot do that.
I said pointless quoting then because i cannot move it. Could not give a price to move furniture.
