Please try PC Inspector file recovery.

Its recovered files many a time, due to frequent crashes (and subsequent reformatting hard drive) when using Windows ME (thankfully upgraded to win 7, although woefully not supported by Convar :().

Hopefully you will get back your medical documents; Worth a try anyway.

Thank you to everyone for all you help, but not to the person who knows everything and steals. ;)

The music downloads I think I can get again from Tescos as it's all paid for.
That just leaves the medical record but never mind.

As someone said above, you can use RECUVA or suchlike to scan your harddrive for them. Youll almost certainly retrieve some things

Certainly worth a try. But, please once you have done so, make an immediate backup. Not at the weekend, not tomorrow -now.
All hard drive die eventually, it's not if but when, and I'm guessing that yours is quite few years old now, so it's on borrowed time already.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Err, that they only charged £30 and could only 'solve' the problem by reformatting and reinstalling?

How does charging only £30 prove in any way that anything dodgy went on?
Providing that the computer in question had a legit COA affixed to it, there is nothing wrong or illegal in using a different disk to reinstall XP provided it was the same version (home or professional) as stated on the COA.
The £30 would simply be the labour charge for the work carried out.

It doesn't, which is why the poster who made the comment said "Chances are....."

    i.e. it's a high probability, not cast-iron certain.

Don't know why you all keep giving the OP advice such as installing recuva. No offence but she doesn't exactly seem to know anything about computers.

She can learn. Are you suggesting everyone in the land who "doesn't exactly seem to know anything about computers" should retain the same level of knowledge ad infinitum and not move on...?

This is sound advice about recovering data, and in case you hadn't noticed, the OP has lost some data which may be recoverable.
