Did you explain your situation to the shop?
As for the original XP reinstall, that was an install over the top so all other files remained
I too would have done what the shop did (formatted and started afresh), if you hadnt told me any different (that said, id have explained what I was to do before hand)
Fully agree, the consequences of a clean installation (always better than 'over the top') should have been explained.
..and there is a full drive backup as well..on another drive (boot drive is only a little 64Gb ssd)

Chances are they used a knock-off license of XP for the reformat/install.0

I just get sick of people blaming everyone but themselves for losing so called important information.
But not everyone is as savvy as you may be. Remember people come on here for advice in how to get things back not have a lecture about backing up all the time.."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0 -

Based on what information? I have a stack of OS installation CDs for XP Vista, Win7 and enter the licence key on the base of the computer. If its branded, I also have a stack of recovery discs as well and use those. If there's no licence key it gets Ubuntu shoved on it.
Just because you would put a hooky copy on doesn't mean everyone will and someone running a shop is more likely to be prosecuted if caught.0 -
100% incorrect, reinstalling XP completly erases anything on the driv
Nope it does not completely erase lots of data will be left on the drive simple recovery tools will find some paid for may find more expensive drive recovery may find a lot more and forensic recovery may well show everybit since the drive was new .

Err, that they only charged £30 and could only 'solve' the problem by reformatting and reinstalling?0 -
Could have been worse then. Tech Guys would have charged £70 to reinstall and wipe all your data.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Thank you to everyone for all you help, but not to the person who knows everything and steals.
The music downloads I think I can get again from Tescos as it's all paid for.
