"Bootzilla" may also be of some interest. I will confess that I have not used it in its current form but it was good back in the days it was known as BhT (Bench Tools).

Nowt wrong with a couple [ or more ] beers lad, unless, like me you make pratt of yourself. Were i work it's eurosoft pc check for us that is very good but as you say it's very pricey.
We have tried many different pc checks, some free and some not but always go back to eorosoft as it's the one that seems to find the faults the best out of the lot and i find that a lot of the manufacturers use eurosoft.
Acer swear by it and it's widely used be Acer/infoteam, although i got a call from Toshiba the other day saying it can give fails readings on the Toshiba's and they have there own testing software that they use especially made for the Toshiba's that they wont give me a copy of, well they was no harm in asking lol
