There is no need to send away your console to any repairers as it is a known fault on some PS3 models. Just be honest and explain that the retailers have agreed to reimburse/replace the console but you need a engineers report. The report should say among other things:-

Main board has an overheating issue, causing CPU & GPU to un-solder from the main board.

Due to high heat when PS3 is running. Then parts un-solder from board causing the PS3 to shut down when in use, Then only turning on then shutting down straight away. (named as YLOD)

This is Manufacture fault due to poor cooling system, there is nothing end users can do to stop this happening

It was a while ago that I got my report but here is the address for all to use.

My PS3 (brought in 2007) got YLOD in May last year. Game would have none of it and I tried claiming with S75 of the Consumer Credit act with the credit card company. The CC company asked for a fault report which i obtained from a local reair centre. needless to say neither the CC company nor Game will take responsibility  and told me to take them to court. to cut a long story short my Small Claims court case is next month.

Spoke to Play.com and without having to get an engineers report, they offered £70 to basically go away. So once I got a new 160gb from Sainsburys for about £155, sold the old PS3 with YLOD on ebay, it cost me about £40 for the new one. Which seemed worth it to avoid having to get the engineers report and argue about it for 3 months. For me I would count this as a 75% win for me.
