My son's 60gb PS3 got the YLOD after 3 years of use. We still had the receipt so phoned up the retailer Argos who we bought it from to enquire about a repair and to my surprise she said if I can get an Engineer's Report stating it was caused by a manufacturing fault we would get a replacement PS3 slim. Most console repairer's want you to post your PS3 to them and they will open it up ( would you trust anyone to do this? ) before they will give you a report which Argos say's is not necessary as there are so many PS3 with YLOD out there that an engineers report by someone who has come accross this before would be OK. After many fruitless phone calls we came accross a very knowledgeable Console Repair Engineer who new all about this YLOD and was only to glad to help and sent us out a detailed report confirming the manufacturing fault all for £20. I now have my new PS3 thanks to him.

There is no need to send away your console to any repairers as it is a known fault on some PS3 models. Just be honest and explain that the retailers have agreed to reimburse/replace the console but you need a engineers report. The report should say among other things:-

Main board has an overheating issue, causing CPU & GPU to un-solder from the main board.

Due to high heat when PS3 is running. Then parts un-solder from board causing the PS3 to shut down when in use, Then only turning on then shutting down straight away. (named as YLOD)

This is Manufacture fault due to poor cooling system, there is nothing end users can do to stop this happening

It was a while ago that I got my report but here is the address for all to use.
