How to use SKY HD once subscription stopped

I stopped subscribing to my SKY HD after 1 year. However, I had recorded some programs on the HD box which I now cannot access. Sky said that I can only watch the programs I have already recorded with a current subscription because there is some software in the HD box which only works if you are subscribing to Sky. In other words the box is usesless if I don't subscribe to SKY. My questions are :
1. Does any one know if this is true?
2. If it is true, is there any way to legally get the box to work so that I can watch my previously recorded programs as well as being able to record new Free to Air channels ?

If you want to record free to air channels you'll need to get a freesat HD box, or similar digibox0 -
Think you can pay Sky £10 a month to keep your record facility, inc live pause, rewind etc. You'll only beable to view the programmes you've recorded if they are from channels available on free to air. i.e if it was a film recorded on Sky movies then it won't be accessible, unless you resubscribe to sky again with movies.
