Trying to downgrade Windows 7 to XP

Options
Hi

We installed Windows 7 on DH's lappy a few months ago as couldn't find the XP disc. We have found a disc, it's not the original one that was used on the lappy, but I had one before I upgraded to Windows 7.

I've tried to put Windows XP on and it won't go far as it says that Setup did not find and hard disk drives installed in your computer.

Any idea's on how to fix this as DH can't use his lappy to watch DVD's as it thinks my Windows 7 is not genuine, when it is but probably only meant to be on 1 machine

  • your laptop has a SATA hard drive and XP doesnt support that nativly

you will need to go into the BIOS of the laptop (press DEL or F2 normally)

and change the SATA controller from AHCI to IDE

I've downloaded the driver required for the hard drive, but the laptop doesn't have a floppy drive and I don't have any floppy discs. Any idea's?

It was XP installed on it before, but we had to do a complete reformat as DH had let virus' into his computer as he didn't do the scans to remove them

Chances are that was with the original XP disc from the manufacturer which would have either been a hard drive image or had the SATA driver slipstreamed into the installation. As you've been told, go into the BIOS and set the SATA mode from AHCI to Compatible or whatever option it has.

Is this bit as easy as it sounds?

'coz XP is a nice OS? OP feels comfy with XP? they have a COA for XP but not for 7? a.n.other reason the OP has?

must admit, I don't get people XP bashing, it's a decent OS. Now if it was Vista...........;) :):D
