Mobile Speed Cameras!!! Help!

2»

Comments

  • There was one on my way home from work last week. OK, I was doing under the 30mph limit, but I still wouldn't be surprised to get an NIP. The camera could've always been badly calibrated or operated.

One of our local "safety" scamera pratnerships is also desperate for cash, because a local councils have pulled out of the scheme. Now that most motorists have been terrorised into obeying the speed limits, it isn't raking in as much money as they were promised.

Rant over. I feel so much better now. Nurse!

People being charged for committing a crime that's all full.
  • You would be unlucky to be punished for 34 in a 30 but at the end of the day you yourself admit you were speeding so just man up and pay the price. Its the choice you make when you push your luck.

How does the OP know they have been caught?

As the mobile speed vans around here use digital camera that don't flash and also use ANPR.

I think the OP was either going a lot more than 34mph and therefore knows he will get a ticket, or they are worrying over nothing.

Does anybody know of any mobile speed camera vans where they pull you over and give you a ticket right then and there?

Check out the POIWarner software, which can be installed on many brands of satnav. Its a few !!!8364; for the soft, then about !!!8364;12 a year for the subscription to the up to date database of points of interest. Obviously the key points of interest are speed cams. Its has lists for each type, speed, perm or common mobile spots etc. Once enabled, it just pops up a window on the screen and beeps when you're coming up to them. Plus gives a specific warning if you're going too fast for the camera.

Only downside is, after a while, you've driven through so many cameras, your brain gets numb and you start to blank out the beeping, it no longer becomes jarring and you find yourself ignoring it... :( Still, its great when you're driving somewhere new. You can even edit the lists too, so it doesn't persistently beep about the camera that's 200 yds from your driveway. :)

Going back many years I worked on the Highways Dept flagging and tarmac, one day a policeman came to cabin and said, "OK who's the bright spark?" We all looked a bit surprised and someone asked what he meant.
Apparently someone had used one of our road signs, turned it round and chalked 'Speed check ahead' on it, we noticed this as we made the job safe the evening before but we just turned it back round again.
Any way this policeman said, "Well for your information we didn't catch a single motorist through that sign," one of the lads commented and said, "Well isn't that a good thing, it means everybody obeyed the speed limit and they drove safely?" The policeman said, "We had officers on duty all day doing the speed check it cost a lot of money in wages," so another guy said, "Well next time don't put any officers there and use one of our signs," he wasn't amused and left us with a warning even though none of us had done it.

Oh yes, whole heartedly agree. However sometimes, particularly when driving somewhere new, its not always obvious what the limits are. You're busy trying to keep up with satnav: is it this left? next one? or where the road forks slightly? which lane am I supposed to be in? will you kids be quiet, we're nearly there. Its 2 lanes here, are we still in a 40 zone or have we dropped to 30? !!!!! got to take that slip road, quick nip into that gap there - ahhhh there goes aa camera, how fast was I going!? !!!!!

My point being, I think its just another useful tool to help you stick to the limits. we all naturally fluctuate our speed a little as we go up/down hills. Don't we? Or do we all slam the brakes on as we go down hills in case will climp past 70mph and go forbid, hit 75mph?

My satnav has the speed limits of most roads and warns when you exceed them, but since the maps only get updated every year or two, they're often out of date or simply missing. The POI thing, is just a handy layer on top to do pretty much the same, but its can be synced with more up to date info.

I visited an uncle not long ago and he warned me of a particular road, he said the speed limit is 60mph but be careful because all of a sudden you round a bend and drops to 30mph and there is a camera there, a lot have been caught with that one.
Apparently it was in the local newspaper but it hadn't been moved before the bend and no signs warning you of the sudden change till you were on them, obviously a money making scheme for the local council.
