Car Insurance - Swapping Cars back on policy.

Options
In December 2009, I took out an insurance policy on a POLO 1.4 and paid the insurance policy in full at the time of taking the policy out.

In May 2010 I got a new car (a GOLF 1.6) and switched the cars so that the GOLF was the car on the policy. We paid the addidtional fee (was about £260.00) and all was ok. I still have the POLO in my possession but it hasn't been driven since May.

In October 2010, the named driver on my policy (son) was involved in a car accident on the GOLF and the case is still ongoing at this moment in time. We have been told over the phone that the car is a write-off but as it is ongoing the settlement check hasn't come through yet.

The renewal for the insurance is in December and we have already had the renewal quote for the GOLF (at £2,200+:mad:). The quote came in 9 days after the accident so not sure whether this was taken into account or not. But obviously, there is no car (GOLF) to re-insure!

I am thinking of having the POLO back on the policy. Granted, I understand that I will probably get another renewal quote for the POLO if this goes ahead and the insurance accept it as the policy is due for renewal in December.

In light of the accident and claim going through at the moment, can anyone shed any light on what will happen, what my insurance might say, fees to pay etc. TA

Just phone and get revised quotes. One quote to add on the Polo from now to renewal and one for a revised renewal based on the Polo.

Once you get the quotes you can decide what to do. If you get proof of the NCD you have with the current Insurers, shop around to see if you can get a cheaper quote. Just because you have had a recent claim for a write-off, does not mean you can't get a cheaper policy elsewhere from renewal. Suggest that you phone companies and brokers to get the quotes, so you can supply the full info. Don't be tempted to cancel the existing policy before renewal, as you would could end up having to pay cancellation charges.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

    Check your policy wording.

Many policies end after a write off. (ie the total loss means the policy cannot continue with any replacement car, and a new policy is needed)
