Good grief, Ive just called my mum to tell her what you lot have said. She says that after our discussion yesterday she has realised the man 'took her for a mug' and is annoyed, and has decided to go to the bank herself today and complain and will probably take her custom elsewhere.....see I told you she was fiesty!

I tried to tell her that it wouldnt bother them if she moved banks, and it would be a hassle moving her direct debits etc, that the man had got his commision or added her to his monthly target for signing her up already.

I just hope she doesnt take freddies advice about the sherry and scissors!

I'll see what happens today and follow this up with something official if she wants to, good point about reporting this in case theres a pattern of this behaviour in the bank or with this person.

Thanks for all the advice everyone.

On a side note, you can just ring up and ask for a new cheque book so she doesn't need to have these pirates hassling her again
  • What bank was it? Not Lloyds/TSB, by any chance?

They have a track record for this if you use their counter service for relatively simple requests such as a new chequebook.

Thanks smileyhaggis, she does have 'no marketing' with the bank, but they must have got round this by saying she would have to speak to someone about getting a new cheque book, then its the 'while you re here...' discussion when shes sat down in the office.

She still doesnt even know if they are getting a new cheque book for her either!!!!!

Counter Assistant (Teller) can order cheque books.
Sounds like the teller was under pressure to refer customers to an interviewer.
This heavy handed 'selling' was stopped a while back when watchdog did a report on the tactic.
Hope they're not 'at it' again.....makes me sooooo angry as they do tend to target and almost bully vulnerable people.

I had this carry on recently, also with Lloyds TSB. I wanted to open a regular saver at the 5% interest rate.
I went in to ask and was told I needed to see someone in the little office.

This happened last year when I opened this account and I ended up with the duo airmiles credit card (which is rubbish) so I was prepared for the hard sell.

Wow, he tried to sell me allsorts. Started with insurance and moved on to a business account that is free for 18months. I told him I don't need a business account but he insisted I do (I am a self employed cleaner/avon rep) he said the reason I need it is because I don't have an accountant!!!! my earnings are under the personel tax allowance so I don't pay tax. He then practically accused me of tax evasion as my current account always has a lot in it since 4% interest is paid on that account. (I am also mortgage free so no housing costs)

He also said that "I need it as if I wanted I could then get a mortgage with his bank". I said "you wouldn't give me a mortgage on what I earn no matter what account I have". He then said that "they would as they no longer use the multiple wage calculater", I said "are you telling me you would lend me £90,000 to buy a house if I had a business account" and he said "yes" !

I only bank with them as it is 4 minutes walk from my house and other banks are a bus ride away.
Life is not the way it’s supposed to be. It’s the way it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.

my gf just spent a few months working for a bank. The stories she tells are disgrace no wonder were in financial black hole. They've not changed and are still pushing loans and credit cards.

Well she went in, and they told her that the cheque book had to be delivered to her old branch, and they would have to post it on to her new branch for collection, so she will be getting a cheque book soon. She also asked about the credit card, the assistant went to see the 'man in the back' who signed my mum up, his message was that it had been cancelled yesterday (presumably just after I called the branch and they told me it could not be cancelled!!)

Im also guessing they knew I'd rumbled them after I'd called and they tried to get rid of the application incase I make a complaint.

Mum gets home to find the credit card on her door mat...she tells me she would like to 'shove it where the sun doesnt shine' apparently!

So I'll pass her the sherry, and cut the damn thing up before she returns to the bank with her 'proposal'.
