you do need the PAC, depends on what you want and what you're looking for. the most popular tariff on most providers seems to be the 200 xnet, the Samsung D500 is a good phone as is the Motorola V3 and Nokia 6230.2p off is still 2p off!0

if you have cancelled you need to make sure you use the PAC code before your contract ends otherwise your number will be lost, if they've just given you the PAC but not cancelled the contract until you use the PAC you should be OK though0

The PAC code is only used to transfer your old number to the new network. So if you are transferring your old number, there is no need to cancel your old contract.
You only need to ask the old network for your pac code and once transferred to the new contract the old contract is automatically terminated.
If you cancel your contract before a PAC code is used, then you will lose your old number.0 -
Some providers I've had require you to give 30 days notice to cancel a contract. Alternativley don't tell them your cancelling but request a PAC code, which may then take a week to arrive (if requested over phone. never done it in a shop before - may be quicker) - Got my last PAC from 02 in 2 days via SMS. Pass the PAC code to your new provider and then it may take a week for your old number to transfer to your new phone. Once the transfer goes through my old contracts have always automatically been cancelled. PAC codes valid for approx. 3-4 wks. You end up with a small overlap period where both contract are running.
If you wait for PAC code before getting new phone you minimise period you're paying for 2 contracts. But, if you've seen a good deal on a new phone you might be better of getting it straight away if you're concerned the deal may dissapear - which they often do.
Think it may cost, or may not be possible, to port number to a new contract with same provider.0 -
