Scam letter?

Thanks for your posts, everybody. I have just received HL Solicitors letter as well. It is addressed to a different person, but has my address in it.
The letter is dated 24 October and it requires a payment of £28.74 being made to Sigma SPV1 Limited within 7 days. It provides the account number and it states that should I not make this payment, legal proceedings will be issued against me in the County Court for the full amount with interest and costs.
I gave a call to the telephone number provided, but it is an answer machine.
I had a look on the net what Sigma SPV1 Limited is. They are a new debt collection company, formed in 2012. And I never had any dealings with them.
Why would a debt collection agency ask a solicitor like HL Solicitors write out a letter on their behalf, when it is clearly their own job?0 -
Because...
(a) They think a solicitor's letter is more scary to most people.
(b) HL Legal offer a letter service that debt collectors can use to automatically generate letters for a few pence each, or even to allow debt collectors to print their own with the HL letter head.
In other words, the letters look scary but are usually a 'cheap shot' and have never been seen by a real solicitor.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

]Just off the phone to a lovely fella @ Littlewoods. Checked my account and he could see that I had paid off balance. He double checked and assured me that definitely no outstanding money owed, in fact I'm £150 in credit with them :j
He gave me a number to ring to report what has happened as they are viewing it as a type of identity fraud. It makes me angry that scams like this happen! I only googled it as an after thought, I'm sure there are other people out there who would go to pay it without checking in to it first.
My husband got the same letter and it was from shop direct which we never used and only had lived here just over a year and the letter was addressed to him with a debt of 147.49 from 4th Oct 2010. argghhh.0
