I received a similar letter yesterday and also had a phone call at work from these people. Apparently I owe nearly six hundred pounds. On the phone a foreign gentlemen asked me to confirm the first line of my address. I didn't, but asked him what it was concerning. He replied that it was about a Littlewoods account and insisted I confirmed my address again. I hung up due to his annoying persistence.
Weird thing is, the return address on the reverse of the envelope it arrived in is Returns Department, 10 Stafford Place, Moulton Park, Northampton NN3 6NN. A Google search of this address is suspicious to say the least.
Here's the text from the letter so it will at least show up in search results:Reference: Shop Direct Finance Company Limited

This means that the effective owners of the above account are now MKDP LLP.

We confirm the amount outstanding on your account as at the 4th October 2010 was £xxx.xx.
With effect from date of receipt of this notice all payments due to Shop Direct Finance Company Limited shall be paid to MKDP LLP. The details of the MKDP LLP account for these purposes are: Royal Bank of Scotland, Sort Code xx-xx-xx, and Account Number xxxxxxxx, please quote DSDxxxxxxx on all payments you make.
To my knowledge, I don't have an account with any of the aforementioned and never have. Not only is the letter badly written and unprofessional, there are no logos on it, it's not on a letterhead and it's not from a specific person. I think it's a scam as everything seems so unfamiliar and out of the blue. I would be interested to see if anyone else received a similar letter.0 -
i also got this letter on sat the weird thing is i checked my credit file and a previously settled account has now got a query sign on it but this account was settled in 2006 andi have never recieved any letters for over 4 years . so what is this all about .0

Seems weird that the letter just seems to be for information. They're not actually requesting payment. They don't seem to want a response as such.0

had the exact same letter today stating that I owe £330 as of 4th October, very clever, had me going for about 30 seconds, I did have a littlewoods account but settled it in 2005 and my credit file states this as well.

Holy thread revival batman!
I got one today and the flaming thing has my name on it! BUT I dont owe anything to anyone, I dont even have any catalogues in my name, they are all in my partners name and thats always been her domain anyway.
I hit the net looking for confirmation this is some kind of scam. Something doesnt seem right about this letter at all... they claim I owe £274.48... the letter is exactly the same as everyone else has had:
Shop Direct Finance Company Limited
Reference: Shop Direct Finance Company Limited, *******, *******
We are writing to imform you that the above account was assigned and transferred by shop direct finance company etc etc...
MKDP LLP is there and also the return address is the same as mentioned earlier.
The only problem is my name on this so shall I:
Ignore it
Call them and then insist on written proof of what they are claming and who its for
or just write to them and also check my credit history and get a report just in case they do something nasty?
Thx

I got in contact with Littlewoods who were kind enough to confirm the account in question was in my name and also provided me with an account reference.
I wrote to MKDP/MKRR requesting more information and got a phone call a few days later from a pleasant chap who confirmed the account was opened by the occupiers of my current address but dated back to 1999. I moved here in 2008 so clearly this account has nothing to do with me. He said they'd get in contact with Littlewoods and told me that, chances are, I'd heard the last about it.
Sounds all genuine now, but the approach was a little bewildering to say the least. If they'd mentioned the 1999 bit at the start, I could easily have informed them the account was someone else's.
A friend of mine works about the return address on the envelope and seems to think that's just some guy with a contract to stuff envelopes, so that's probably above board too.
Hope this clears it up for a few people.0 -
Did more digging and it is leaning towards somebody using my details on a catalogue.
I rang shop direct and they say there is nothing on our address under my name but didnt put me at ease when stating if its in the hands of mkrr then they cant see anything anyway... is this right?
Next im trying to get a statory credit report with callcredit and that isnt working!
I feel like a right tool at the moment trying to sort this out.0
