In need of land line and broadband

Hi All,
Having recently moved house, I need to set up a broadband connection. We primarily want it for general surfing and online gaming, so was aiming for a mid-price o2 LLU package. I've checked our exhange and we can get this service.
Where I get confused however is the landline part. There is a landline in our house, but I don't know whether it's connected and don't have a phone to check. I don't mind paying a one-off payment to have a line installed or re-connected, but don't really want a monthly payment if I can avoid it.
What's the general consensus on a cheap way for me to get broadband? I'm not bothered about making calls on a landline, because my mobile phone contract provides all I need. I just need the connection. Is there a particular provider who you recommend, or is it basically a case of I have to pay BT a monthly line rental?

If you want the broadband over the phone line you are going to have to pay someone for the line rental. If you are going to use the O2 LLU bundle then you are going to have to pay O2 for the line rental as far as I'm aware.0

hi milzibkit.
first thing is look at what your going to use your broadband for.i use mine for gaming and watching tv etc so i went for a fast light provider (be unlimited) which costs me about seventeen quid a month.i've used a lot of different providers over the years and have found them the fastest.i do pay bt for my line which i'll change when the contract runs out, they just happened to be the cheapest at the time.before be i used plusnet which i found good but at the time it wasn't unlimited usage.i would always go for speed and reliability over cost.i've tried cheap packages and not enjoyed the experience.if you want to review a lot of different providers try looking at thinkbroadband.com, they have a comparison page with all the main providers on there, and i believe they are independent.
hope this helps a bit.0 -
You've made a good choice with O2. It's very unlikely that you'll find better value (or performance) for ADSL.
Regarding line rental - why on earth would BT maintain a line for free? You need it for ADSL so you have to pay the rental.0 -

Thanks for the replies so far.
I don't expect something for nothing!
I just wondered if there were any better options out there than paying BT a line rental. It seems o2 will provide me a phone line, which would be easier if I can just pay them to provide a phone line and broadband.
If I don't want to use the phone line for anything other than an internet connection, I didn't want to get tied into a contract with BT which wasn't the most cost-effective option.0 -
I was in a similar situation, basically had to take out a call package I don't even need. I went with Plusnet because I also only needed 6 months of service. £25 gets me 60GB a month and that includes my line rental, not too bad considering my situation. Mobile broadband was costing me £15 a month anyway and it really didn't work well at all.0

No landline, no ADSL. And if you want a landline, then you have to pay line rental, end of. If you want O2 broadband, you either have to pay them line rental, or BT (which includes a minimum call package). Since you can now get O2 line rental without any additional call package, that would seem the better option for you, assuming 02 can offer you the reconnection (probably around £80).No free lunch, and no free laptop
