Rochester has a bit more character if you really want to be out that way. The Medway Towns do have a bit of a 'chav' tag on them, but people do still want to live in those areas, and there are worse places, I believe. Dartford's not too bad but probably pricier (if you want to be that way). Used to stay in Gravesend a lot (my ex lived in Cobham) and went out in places nearby. Fun while we were that way when I was 17-21, but not wouldn't fancy it now.

I thought trains were quite pricey still from the Medway Towns...

Dartford is pricier but not too much - you can get 2 beds for 120-130k. Remember that although property price may be higher, the train cost will be cheaper and the commute slightly shorter.

Dartford is a wonderful town and most think prices will rocket there over the next few years.

Its a bit run down in the town centre, but once Lowfield street is sorted no reason why prices should not rise, close to Blue water, good road links, good train links, some very good schools, modern hospital.

The prices have been dropping quite a bit in Dartford and it has lots of For Sale boards on houses that don't seem to budge. A large Polish community and polish shops opening up, but still lots of empty shops and even an estate agents has closed down and that shop is empty too. Constant droning of the M25 on the east side. High crime rate. Very much a welfare claiment type town.

For rail travel: it is outside zone 6, so still quite high costs for travel into zone 1.
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.
Read the sticky on the House Buying, Renting & Selling board.

  • I would agree thatthe Medway towns has a lot more going for it than Gravesham, having lived in both. The Medway towns is in the middle of a massive regeneration, towns such as Chatham have 3 universities and have also have the fast London Victoria service.
