I recently bought a Samsung 1Tb Story Station Hard Drive on Amazon for a very good price.

The item though was shipped form Germnay and came with just a 2 pin plug cable that then connects to the power supply box that then conencts to the hard drive.

Is there an adapter you can buy and is it safe to run it off the mains in the UK? I will be copying things to it at night so ob don't want it getting faulty then.

    Thanks.

FIRST read the doucmentation or the plug itself to see it it can take a 240V socket, if it cannot they wou will have to use a converter, if it can you can just use a bog standard plug converter.

Anyone know if Germany also uses a 240v supply?

no they use 110V just like all of europe.
  • My information seems to suggest Germany has 240V 50Hz the same as us.

Yes it's 240v but if you look at any modern power brick the chances are it will work on 110v or 240v anyway.

ah well, our plugs are better anyway, so the OP can just use a bog standard euro plug to UK plug converter.
  • Just use a converter mate.
    Btw, Europe uses 240V @ 50Hz.
I've been in most european capitals and can confirm that for sure. Also i live in Bulgaria and most of my electric gadgets are from Europe and UK too.

Actually, the declared voltage, here and across the majority of the EU is 230V. This has been the case in the UK for at least 10 years.

You might be better off cutting off the 2 pin plug and fitting a standard 3 pin UK plug. (the 2 pin plug isn't fused, nor will the adaptor have a fuse).
Are you sure, all the adaptors I've bought in the past few years - including Poundland ones - have had a fuse.

Its most probably jus a "figure of 8" lead anyway and if you are worried about the warranty then buy one or if you work for a larger firm just ask the IT department for one or cut the Euro plug off and fit a UK one.
  • What the seller, by law, should have supplied is a fused Euro to UK converter which attaches permanently to the Euro plug and is fused. You can also get it from Maplin.
