Exactly! Especially with as much FREE WiFi as there is in the US. Just about all hotels, public places, have free WiFi.

Couldnt you have used wi-fi? I went to Florida in September and used the wi-fi in our hotel, which luckily was free, and also the free wi-fi hotspots in Starbucks, McDonalds etc. I used the network data only a couple of times when I was out and about and needed to check account balances etc. My bill was only £36 compared to the £25 it usually is

I find it astonishing that you were willing to pay even £120 in data charges. They must have been important emails! If you really had no access to wi-fi then with a little planning you could have had your phone unlocked and used a local payg sim in it.

For future reference get an app such as this so that you know exactly what is using your data http://www.appbrain.com/app/trafficinfo/com.curvefish.apps.trafficinfo Smartphones are significantly more data hungry than their predecessors.

    Hi mkjones

Sorry to see that you have had a high bill for data roaming.

When using data outside of Europe the charges are £3 per MB for the first 5 MB's and then £15 for every 5 MB's after that. To try and keep the costs down, I would always recommend connecting to WiFi whenever possible.

Having just apparently consumed a sudden 40 Mb of thether data (I assume something on my PC tried to auto update) I would say don't use data roaming as all of the networks are out to rip you off. Just compare Vodafone's domestic data rate and then look at what they charge via their own company in France and see if you can work out why they have so much profit on which not to pay tax.

I think we all ought to have a data roaming strike!

As soon as my Vodafone contracts end I'm up for a change as they have lost my loyalty with these crazy charges - 40 Mb of data in France had just cost me as much as 900 minutes, unlimited texts, 750Mb of data and a 24th of an Iphone in the UK. And I am using Vodafone (SFR) in France. Doh!

(And on my sim only phone I too had the daily connection at the same time issue with 20k of data each day costing a pound. I have had to get internet usage disabled as I am not paying £30 amonth for nothing! I know they all paid ludicrous amounts for the 3g licences and have to find some ways to screw the money out of us, but they really shouldn'y be quite so obvious about it)
  • When I go abroad I am sure to shut everything off and I haven't got a high bill yet. I do think roaming costs are a rip off though!
