I bow to your superior knowledge Dr Paul, and water muddying was definitely not my intention, nor do I believe I have muddied any for you pros. Yes I was indeed thinking of ACS Law as an example of what was laid bare after the shields were downed.

I am no scholar thesedays, but I very much believe in the law of unintended consequences and am absolutely certain that hackers, and attackers generally over the centuries have always relied heavily upon it.

Edit: The article behind the above link was published 5 years ago. Do we imagine that things have got any better?
  • I cannot believe how quick some people are to jump down MSE's throat and accuse them of malfeasance.
It is every single person's responsibility to protect themselves from internet threats. A basic tenant of this is to NEVER EVER click on links in emails even if you are 100% sure that they are legitamate. One should always go to the website by your own 'favourites link' or by going to the company's home page and then linking through. Everyone should also have protection enabled and this can be done with free products from major companies e.g. MS Security Essentials; AVG Free; MS Defender; CCleaner [Piriform] all my favourites for years.
There is no such thing as a safe web site no matter how much money or expertese is available - ask the Pentagon and FBI!
Finally I am sorry of anyone takes offence but I could not stand by and see all the flack flying about.

TBH I do think that people start to get a bit paranoid about things like this, it is not unique to MSE it happens to many forums large and small.

I suppose that you can't blame people for getting a little uptight about this sort of thing especially as the media do generally blow these sort of issue totally out of proportion so much so that some folks are too scared to shop online or use online banking.

I received the email and deleted it but I have experienced the same thing with other forums etc so I don't get uptight about it.

I don't think MSE should be blamed it can happen to any sites on the net and frequently does.

The only real defence is to educate people that everything is not as it seems and to be aware.:)
  • Just as an addition to my previous post, a member of the household who registered this year has had no email to his email address.

This attitude helps nobody. Apparently Martin Lewis and his team must live sad, pathetic lives since they seem to be concerned about these emails. Yes delete the email, but don't blame people for being concerned that their email address has been gathered via their forum name.
