Nokia maps

I have a Nokia 5800 xpressmusic with Nokia maps on. the GPS can get my position ok but when I then select a destination & click on "Drive to" it search but then cannot calculate the route .
Does it need an internet connection to be able to calculate the route ? Or am I doing something else wrong ?

is your firmware is upto date?
also are you using upto date maps?, to update the maps install ovi suite to your computer and then connect your phone and select the maps bit and delete map data on device then select the maps you want and select copy to device.
  • Currently have v50.0.005 which checks on Nokia site as the latest for my phone .
All maps (UK) where loaded via ovi suite in the last week so would assume they are the latest available .
On the map screen I never get a satellite sign in the bottom right corner all I get is the "connectivity" symbol & a number + kb .

those shouldnt be the problem then, and you dont need any data access at all.

is GPS activated? in maps go into settings and then in one of the menu options (likely Tools) it says 'turn positioning off' (if GPS is activated) or 'turn positioning on' if it is off. set it so GPS is on.

also make sure GPS is activated for the phone, somewhere in either your settings app or GPS folder or applications folder, ther should be a program called 'Positioning' in that it says 'positioning methods' and server, in 'positioning methods' make sure there is a tick next to 'integrated GPS' (and also 'assisted GPS' if you want GPS lock on to be faster but that will use a very tiny ammount of data less than 1p, so is optional).
my path (though not on a 5800) is settings>general>positioning
