I hide cauliflower in my 'cos my LO has also gone VERY picky when it comes to veg. She will now only eat carrots and potatoes in a form that she can see. The rest now is wizzed up and put into gravy, sauces etc. So I started to hide cauliflower into her mash potato, which is mixed with milk and butter.

OK I know it won't taste like smash, but it's a slightly different flavour that may be different enough from normal mash for him to try it, IYSWIM! Plus added bonus, getting an extra veg down him without him knowing - or does he eat cauliflower?

  • Boil spuds in salted water until soft, about 15 minutes by my book.

Meanwhile get a small pan of milk (I use about a mug full) on the stove and bung in an onion studded with cloves and some pepper corns. Bring up to the point where its almost boiling then switch off the heat or keep warm. Also, get a generous knob of butter out of the fridge and stick it somewhere where it can come up to room tempreture.

When spuds are cooked, drain them then add back to the pan and leave for five minutes so the remaining water in them can evaporate. Put through a potato ricer with the butter, stir with a wooden spoon and then add as much of the flavoured milk as necessary to bring it up to the consistency you like. Check the seasoning and plate up!

    Lovely jubly!

  • I was watching Cooking It on channel 4 Tuesday evening and the guy that hosts the program said it's much much better to make mash from roasted potatoes rather than boiled ones because with the latter you end up losing a lot of the taste.

I'll have to give it a go myself and see if I'm convinced.

Those new Rooster potatoes (Sainsbury's) are brilliant - very fluffy, not waterlogged and taste great. They also make excellent roast potatoes. They are a red skin potato and have apparently won loads of awards for taste.

The potato ricer is an essential in this house!

I saw that, wasn't it baked though? It did look nice, but looked as if it took a massive effort to produce.

Now I have a steamer I'm thinking of steaming my tatties instead of boiling, I'm guessing that would be an improvement.

Wow I cant believe how many people use electric whisks for mashed spuds. My friend said she used one and I thought she was away with the fairys, honestly never thought to use one.Saying that I`m terrible with a whisk, everything flys out of the bowl all over the kitchen tiles. But I shall give it a go.I like loads of butter in my mash,so much that it turns yellow.YUMMY!

  • Always use a hand masher for tatties, I like a bit of texture.

Love mash the simple way with knob of butter and whole milk, salt and pepper, yummy.

2nd favourite is leak mash, where I sweat some leeks and garlic off in the butter until translucent while the potatoes are cooking, mash the spuds and hand mix the leeks and garlic in afterwards. Goes lovely on those cold winter nights with me sausages and goose fat gravy.
    I had a plan..........its here somewhere.
