We're the same as Lyndsay_21 - cheese doesn't get the cheap treatment.

The most cost-effective way per kg seems to be loose from the deli counter for us - only trouble is I have to be careful not to get tempted and end up buying twice what we needed, lol

    :)

Cracker Barrel is on BOGOF in the Co-op if anyone wanted some for their Christmas box, by the way

I treat it like wine - buy decent stuff for direct consumption, cheaper stuff to grate & freeze for cooking.

Sainsbury's have got two 400g blocks of mature Cathedral City for £4.00 at the moment. It is usually £3.09 for one.

I bought some this morning,so it should last me for a while.I like a strong cheese, the mild stuff doesn't have enough flavour.

we buy ours in makro in huge giant slabs when its greatly reduced, grate it and freeze it.
    very cheap and very handy.

on the rare occasion we want it to cut in slabs for cheese and biscuits etc...we compromised slightly on taste and instead of mature we buy mild in iceland which is £3 for a 900g slab.
Bit off topic, but do you need a macro card to shop in makro? xx

yes you do......hubby has one through his work.
he can sign in two guests with him though so if you know someone with one you could just ask them if you could go with them.

The offers at Bookers & Makro can be good value, but I find them expensive on a lot of things.
I buy from there for work, as it's easier to load & carry a full tray of Coke than messing about with loose cans.
But Farm Foods are cheaper on cans of pop.
Whilst the meat is often in large packs at Bookers, the butcher will slice a pack of sirloin into steaks for me, to make it easy to freeze.

  • we go for reduced meat at makro mainly....we know what time our local one reduces every day.you cant beat it for value and quality!! regularly get things like a duck for £1, 20 large chicken breasts for £5 instead of £20 etc

In Nettos we always buy Red Seal Mature Cheddar 400g for £2.69 BOGOF.

Always seems bogof so dont know if you have a Nettos nearby but may be worth a visit. Working out at £1.35 for 400g is pretty good and like someone said being mature you dont need as much so moneysaving all round.
