Cheapest/best way to buy cheese

Having kept all my receipts for Oct I have notice we get through a lot of cheese, it will propably be about 10 packs of the 300g cheddar. I have been buying mature as you dont need so much in sauces and alike (its the pizza that is the main offender I think!).

This month I bought 6 packs from tesco when I did my monthly on-line shop, this was on offer 2 packs for £xxx, and the others I got in somerfield as they had Pilgrims on half price (just noticed today catherdral city in on BOGOF again).

How do you buy your cheese? Is there a more economical way to purchase it?

  • we buy ours in makro in huge giant slabs when its greatly reduced, grate it and freeze it.
    very cheap and very handy.

on the rare occasion we want it to cut in slabs for cheese and biscuits etc...we compromised slightly on taste and instead of mature we buy mild in iceland which is £3 for a 900g slab.

    Hiya,

We got our's in Makro too, it wasn't reduced but still worked out cheaper than the normal supermarket prices.

LtS, thanks for that, I'll have to check out my local Iceland!

Think I may investigate getting a bookers cash and carry card for our toddler group, may come in very handy for me, erm the group I mean!! Dont think we have a makro round here (just of to google)

Quick question, when shopping in Makro do you have to add the price on the price on the lable??

I bought Seriously strong cheddar in Asda today on special offer of £1.34 for 400g. We love this and I got 5 packs which should keep us going to Christmas

I imagine you mean do you have to add the VAT on. In which case, yes you probably will, as the pricing at cash & carries is geared towards buyers who can claim the VAT back themselves further down the supply chain.
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

  • makro dont charge vat on food and non alcoholic drinks!!.......i just checked my reciepts to make sure.
they do on all other products though.

If cheese is costing so much perhaps you should cut down on how much you use cheese? Of course I don't know how big your family is but 3 kgs sounds like an awful lot of cheese.

VAT IS charged on food if it is considered a luxury item - i.e. crisps, sweets, etc. Basic 'non-luxury' foodstuffs such as cheese will not have vat :)

we love cheese . i love cathedral city. at one point i was buying the 600/800g packs every few days. but we have decieded not only is that expensive but all that fat can't be good. we would have cheese with everything.

now tho , i will buy one huge block about a 400g or 800g and it is to last the month. i buy mature cheese and buy whatever is on offer. if it is a really good deal then i stock up.

of course some meals require more cheese than other so i don't mind if i have to by more cheese in the month as it is far less than what we were buying.Pizza for me also has alot of cheese. but i found it still tasts just as nice if i use half the cheese. and no one in family has notice. or if they have they haven't complained.
  • i must admit i dont scrimp on the cheese as i love it the stronger the better and all the 'cheaper' cheese i've bought doesn't match up to some seriously strong from the deli counter (not in the pre-packed blocks).
Other women want a boob job. Honey the only silicone i'm interested in is on a 12 cup muffin tray, preferably shaped like little hearts
