Iphone 3G problem

Hi all

I wonder if you lovely clever people can offer some advice.

DD1 is away at Uni and has an Iphone 3G on O2 with OS 4 running on it (she bought it from a guy who works for Apple and he did the update just prior to her buying it). She was at uni today, the phone was in sleep mode in her pocket, she received a text and when she went to look at it there was a message saying 'system error, reconnect to Itunes'. She has gone back to her halls and connected it to her Mac and it said it needed to re-set and update. She ran the update and 3/4's of the way through it said 'unable to continue'. Each time she turns it on she gets the same set of messages. She has tried a system re-set but no luck, it does exactly the same.

Obviously she is living away so we are unable to look at it but I wondered if anyone had any pearls of wisdom other than taking it into the Apple shop at the weekend :(

Thanks

try putting the phone in DFU mode
    • connect the phone to the computer by USB, cancel an sync
    • hold down the power and home buttons for 10 seconds
    • release the power button and continue holding the home button for 10 seconds
    • then let go of the home button (it may take a couple of attempts to get it in DFU mode_
whe it does enter DFU mode it should come up on the computer in itunes that 'a phone in DFU mode has been detected and needs to be restored', click yes to restore. wait untill it has finished.

that should fix the phone, because it is a complete factory reinstallation of the OS, if that doesnt fix it then it will be likely a problem with the hardware.
