Does everyone use a mouthwash?

I have sensitive gums and my dentist has recommended that I use Cordsyl original mouth wash only when my gums are sore and just use toothpaste for the rest of the time. I have just bought some Dentyl for daily use as I used to use that before and it does make my mouth feel fresher but it gets expensive keeping up with two mouth washes. Is it necessary to use one all the time?

I never have, just the sensodyne toothpaste. I probably would if I had a specific problem and the dentist recommended it, but otherwise I tend to think that if you're cleaning your teeth properly and have no health issues that may contribute to bad breath, then it's not necessary.

Try using a salt wash; Does more or less the same thing, and is effective, and cheap.

I don't use one and I try to discourage my DD too.

I don't think it's normally necessary given a healthy cared-for mouth and general good health. There's a massive marketing hype , based on people's insecurities and exaggerated and distorted ideas on personal hygiene.

I brush my teeth again or suck a sugar free mint or maybe gum on the odd occasion I need to feel a bit more confident.

Cordosyl is really good, it doesn't contain alcohol, so just use that for a while, forget the other one for now.
If you really want to use one at other times try and get as gentle as you can find, not too strong.

  • Hi thanks for your replies. Elsien, I use the Sensodyne toothpaste too. The Cordsyl mouthwash does help when my gums are sore but its too strong to use all the time as it can stain your teeth. The Dentyl is good but my dentist said it doesn't do anything for you at all, apart from just freshening your mouth and its a waste of money.

I've never used a mouthwash in my life. I don't have any dental problems, not even signed on with a dentist, haven't been for about 4 years and don't have a single filling or anything. I brush my teeth once a day with whichever toothpaste is on offer. I guess I'm lucky.

Listen to your dentist then I reckon!!:T
  • With the Corsodyl there are more instructions behind the outside label. The thing is to ensure you don't drink tea or coffee for half-an-hour after using it. I believe it is very good for specific problems.

I do use mouthwashes, but try to use them before teethbrushing as I also use Sensodyne toothbrushing which supposedly helps remineralise your teeth (according to dentist), so don't want mouthwash to remove the Sensodyne (if that makes sense). I do have mouth problems (stones on saliva glands), so like to do the maximum; and these teeth have to last a very long time (I hope).

FYI sensodyne is on offer at the moment in Superdrug, 2 for £4 or 2 for £5, depending on which one you use. I stocked up the other day.
