Thomson Buy Back Guarantee query.

Just changed £600 into euros at my local Thomson. They matched the Post Office online rate, which was ok. He says "its 587 Euros including a buy back guarantee' 'Ok' i said.
Now i'm home i've checked the receipt and have been charged £3.95 for this buy back guarantee, which if i'd known i would not have purchased it as i will be travelling again in a couple of months. :(
Does anyone know if it is compulsory to have this 'service'? At no point was i told there was a charge for the buyback guarantee. I'm not happy to say the least. I would have been better off with the co-op rate of 1.1401.
Do i have any comeback on them for this?

    It's not compulsory, no.

But you agreed to it without enquiring as to the cost.

So I doubt if there's any comeback

in all fairness, they quoted what you was getting, and mentioned that the buy back gauranteed was in on it.

personally, i would have gone back to the shop today and queried it, where there was a chance that they could have just reveresed the transaction (depending on how you paid). once they shut the system down at the end of the day, its not that simple.

BTW, Euro 587 for £600 GBP?

    thats Euro 0.97 / £1.

    sure your figures are correct?

  • Haha, yeah i just pressed 5 instead of 6 lol. Can't get back there today unfortunately. I'm not a mathematician so wasn't sure exactly how many euros i should be getting at that rate as the total was £602.91. If he'd said it included £3.95 for the buy back, then fair enough, my mistake. I just feel cheated in all honesty, as its obviously a ploy to get extra money from customers. I'm going to ring them and see what they say.

Its actually worth it to change them back at the guaranteed same buy back rate of around 1.14 as the normal buy rate would be about 1.23 +.
The way the Euro is going you may be able to buy your next batch at 1.17/ 1.18+
  • I'll only have 10 or 20 euros left at best tbh, so its a negligible risk.
Anyway, a happy result to this as i phoned the branch and explained nicely what had happened. The lady was very apologetic and admitted that it shouldn't have been done like it was. I'm going to pick my refund up tomorrow. :)
    Thanks for the replies. :)

Exactly the same happened to me last summer at Thomson's. They also told me the final price including buy-back guarantee without mentioning the additional cost. In the past, adding this as an option has been worthwhile for me, so I didn't complain at the time, but it did strike me as a bit underhand.
  • Sorry to drag up an old post, but I've just had a similar issue to this:

I went into Thomson to buy £500 of euros, and I was told I could change back up to £200 at the same rate. I had noticed the poster on the window for the £3.95 'buy back guarantee', so I questioned the lady as to whether that's what she was referring to. She said no I didn't need that.

I had 90 euros left over so I went in to change it back and was told I couldn't have the same rate unless I had my buy back guarantee receipt. I explained what I had been told and then had to leave my details as the lady who served me wasn't in that day. That lady also happens to be the assistant manager. Also, I was never given anything other than a credit card receipt.

The assistant manager called me today and looked up my transaction. She said that I had purchased the buy back guarantee so I could come in the exchange the money at the same rate.

So, it would seem I was sold the buy back guarantee after being told specifically that I didn't need it, and I wasn't given a receipt so that I didn't know I'd bought it.

Thomson will be getting a letter about this.
