increasing fees may be inevitable, but if the tories really believe in access for all, this would be protected. schemes like this will be even more important when fees go up. it would be tragic to return to a situation where access to uni is purely on financial terms.

I cannot say that i'm suprised, because i'm not. Its typical politicial rubbish which happens to us students 24/7.
have they ever wondered why most students don't bother voting? (i personally do, but i'm a rare exception).
As far as i'm aware the hike in tuition shouldn't affect me, however if they start axing aids then i might be in a spot of difficulty at some stage or another. Currently my university offers a start right bursary yearly which i am reliant on for anything big that i must buy for my course; currently my computer is on the way out the window. Without such funds i would be in a real spot of bother.
If they hike the fees then universities are going to also start saving wherever they can... bye bye bursaries.0 -
I don't have any knowledge of this scheme, but I think as long as individual universities are running their own schemes it should be okay. I'm pretty sure that's how it works in Scotland, with the universities running their own summer schools and things.0

I don't like educational cuts but, in my experience, much of what Aim Higher does has been a total waste of money.0

I personally wouldn't agree. Both myself and my sister were aim higher pupils and what it has done for us both was very useful. I knew I wanted to go to university but it helped me decide what courses to consider, and whether I was cut out for moving away.
For my sister it has helped her decide she wan't to go to university and I am so proud of her. I dont think she would have changed her mind if not for aim higher.0 -

I'm glad you both found the service helpful but surely your teachers would have encouraged you both to consider university?
Personally I'd rather have a real Careers Service again with properly qualified and experienced staff.0 -

True the real careers service would have been excellent but aim Higher was all we had in its place. Unfortunatly our teachers were not so supportive of her (she is a lower achieving grade student than I was) so Aim Higher has helped her a lot.0 -
for me, it's just a really sad message from government - let's make uni much more expensive and also cut scheme promoting wider access.....:happyhear0

No, there has never been a situation where access to university has been on purely financial terms.0 -

University should teach you how to evaluate arguments and produce a reasoned response.
Have you missed that class?0 -

Rather depends on the length of your historical perspective!0
