virgin media can't send outgoing mail 550 error

Hi

In the middle of trying to sort masses of chaos and suddenly this!

The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was '**********@ntlworld.com'. Subject 'Fw: hi', Account: 'pop.ntlworld.com', Server: 'smtp.ntlworld.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 Invalid recipient: <**********@ntlworld.com>', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

Would really value advice.
Many thanks, Cat

What the message is saying is that the email address you were trying to send to does not exist.
Have you checked that it is correct and still in use?

It could of course be a problem with the virgin/ntlworld servers.
  • i would hold on a bit if you have tried a different address and it still doesnt work.

maybe you have lost your account settings some how? unlikely but strange things happen.

if not you will have to get a cup of tea, a book, a packed lunch, and a blanket and call the help desk

hiya hubert ... yes, 'war and peace' comes to mind! ... i nearly typed about just such a strange thing, as 'coincidentally' I'd just been on to virgin media about cancelling a v cheap phone deal and reducing broadband costs, as income fell thru (VM reduced payment a little for 3 months) but as I can receive email and get on the internet, just for now I'll hold off from calling VM (cost £8 thismorning on the mobile!) and see if it's a server error initially ... thanks again, Cat

    OP.... A few suggestions :

    1. Have you tried sending the mail directly via the Virginmedia Googlemail server rather than sending via your PC email client (Outllook, Outlook express. etc) ? If you haven't, just to go http://www.virginmedia.com/, select 'Email' in top right hand corner. sign-on as yourself and compose the message. This will then prove it is the server and not your client that is the root cause.

    2. I'm not sure if you have V/media phone landline or not ? If you have, just ring 150 or 151 to speak to customers services with regards your problem. Both numbers are totally free on a V/media landline.

    3. I'm sure that you were put through to an Indian call centre when you spoke to V/media. As soon as you get through next time, just ask to speak to someone from the UK and they will accomodate your wishes. I have had some bad experiences with the Indian call centre V/media people so I always take this approach nowadays.

    4. Virginmedia have been migrating users gradually over onto Googlemail. I was done a few months ago. I can't remember the schedule and it well may have been completed by now. However, I remember they were advising users to make changes to their mail clients after they had been migrated. I suggest that you request V/media to confirm your migration date and that the appropriate changes have been made to your client.

Good luck and hope this helps.

dear sirmarcus, many thanks for your message ... I'd not thought of doing that at all, so much appreciate you advising ... have sent an email using the googlemail server and it seems to have gone through. Going to have a go at the settings DeltaTwo said as well, as it does look like it's not their server now, from the test you've said to do.

I don't actually have a landline, but thanks so much for you advising about the freephone numbers. And I'll certainly ask about a Uk-based talk next time, as part of the call this morning was an indian man, so that must have been where the costs were accrued.

I had no idea VM were migrating over to google, so am very glad you told me. I'll email VM about migration.

Many thanks. Really helpful. Best regards, Cat

Hi, I tried changing the settings but won't send or receive in OE ... trying Thunderbird as that says it can find the settings ...

comes up with suggesting the IMAP rather than POP settings, and
    INCOMING ... imap.googlemail.com ... 993 ... SSL/TLS
    OUTGOING .. smtp.googlemail.com ... 465 ... SSL/TLS

make sure in username box only type first part of email address ... lesson learnt, lol ... now it works to receive mail ... but not to send ... says login to server smtp.googlemail.com failed
