Sky broadband help.

Hope this is right place for help!
Got the new house moved in and got Sky, they were doing a good deal on the unlimited broadband service they offer so we got it last week.
Speeds 'up to' 20Mb are promised and I'm not expecting those speeds but I went onto our account online and seen that our line can apparently support speeds of up to 4Mb. The speed has went up to an average of 3.5Mb but I've also researched and found out that out telephone exchange is across the road if I'm right.
I've posted a similar thread on a few sites I'm a member of and a couple of Sky Engineer people got back to me, one stated that (his PM copied below)
Line Length: 2888 and your on a ISAM exchange i cant even edit your exchange you have a lot of errors building they are normally down til something at your side btw , extentions , faulty line , filters , etc.
Going on stats people have stated that my router stats & position to the exchange means there is a fault somewhere or the route my line takes back to the exchange must be a joke!
Phew long post, thanks for looking!

So what are your router stats? The fact that you live opposite the exchange does not mean that the cabling goes directly to your door, it may go miles round the neighbourhood before reaching you.
Are you running your speedtest using ethernet (not wireless) from the BT test socket behind the master socket split faceplate?-this will isolate any faults on your extension wiring.
Known good ADSL filters on all active extensions (not forgetting on your Sky box)?
However if you have established that the line can support only 4Mbps and you are getting around 3.5Mbs, there's little room for improvement.
Is there any noise/crackling on the line? Dial 17070, select option 2, BT Quiet test.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Copied these stats from my router a few weeks ago, posted them on another site. In work atm, so can't get them unfortunately.
Connection Speed 4095 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 57.5db 35.3db
Noise Margin 6.8db 9.4db
Those are with the faceplate on. Faceplate off stats are...
Connection Speed 4095 kbps 796 kbps
Line Attenuation 57.5db 35.3db
Noise Margin 7.7db 8.4db
There is only one box in the house, installed by the engineer and the Sky+ Box doesnt run off that. It's just the phone and router that are attached.
Line appears to be clean and crackle free. I do understand the problem that the line can take a looong route back, but you'd think common sense would bundle my street and run the further streets away through that and not make my line follow the route to Timbuktu
highly frustrating.
Does anyone have any help regarding these MAC codes? Or do you need to be out of contract with Sky?0 -
With your attenuation 57db, your line is around 4Km long, so you are unlikely to be connected to the exchange across the road, far from it.
Do an exchange search on samknows to find out where you are connected.
Changing ISP wont improve your line stats. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

And the OP has only been in a contract with Sky for one week, so nearly a year to go on the minimum term anyway. No free lunch, and no free laptop

samknows says I'm on the exchange I think I am, 161M away as the crow flys lol.
Would being on a new landline number that isn't the 'normal' area code be anything to do with it? In and around my area is 90 and the number were given is 95.
Also apologies for the original post, I forgot to edit the copied text, we joined Sky in August, still not long though.0 -
Unfortunately, crows and Openreach cable layers tend to follow completely divergent routes. The area code is not relevant.
Subject to no internal issues, which you seem to have ruled out, your problem is pure and simple-distance from the exchange. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Nice reply, made me lol!
Typical thinking to run the closest cables to the exchange into others running all around the neighbourhood lol.0
