How PAC code works?
Can someone explain, is it the PAC alone that switches the number or do they also need the number you're wanting to switch? The reason I ask is one simply of paranoia.
I called three and got a PAC
Called Tesco and they asked for the mobile number I want to use and the PAC. I gave both, the guy then told me to switch the phone off at a certain time/date and not put it back on until another given time. He also said he'd text these details to my old number (the one i'm changing to) along with some other details but no text has arrived.
So I'm wondering, if he's picked up the mobile number wrong will it actually matter or is it just the PAC alone they use to transfer (and the PAC will be associated with the correct number thus transfer the correct number?)
Thanks

I am not able to answer your question but want to issue a warning about what happened to me when a I got a Pac with the carphone warehouse O2. I asked for a pac from my contract phone, got a pay as you go, never then used a pac as got a bit bamboozled with it all and unknown to me the carphone o2 account does not close until you use the pac, 12 months latter I got a letter from a debt collection company as I had moved house and closed the direct debit thinking I had nothing left to pay, to find out I owed £151!! all a bit of a nightmare:((2012 wins; ladybird trunki and ladybird books, three mascaras.
Sending you all the comping fairy dust in 2012 and sprinkling some on myself too:j0 -
You need to give the number and the PAC to the recipient network. When they present them to the donor network they have to tally or the port will be refused. So if the number was taken down wrongly, the port won't happen.
Its the case with all providers that using the PAC cancels the contract, but just asking for it doesn't.0 -
Here's how it (should) work;
1. You speak to retentions with your original network (the donor network) and request a disconnection and a PAC code.
2. You're issued with a PAC code from your original network which is valid for 30 days.
3. You create a new contract with another network hopefully getting a better deal.
4. With your new network you request that your old number is ported in giving the CSA your old mobile number AND the PAC code. They will need both of these.
5. Generally the network will send a text message to your new (temporary) number confirming the port and telling you what will happen. This should always be to the temporary number you were issued with your new contract as a lot of the time the old number which the PAC code correspond to has already lost service.
6. When the port goes through both phones will lose service for a period of time, you'll genuinely be asked to turn your new phone on and off until you have service again. You may find that voice calls work, but SMS, data or voice mail doesn't for a while as it can take a while for everything to get transferred over to the new number.
If he took the mobile number down incorrectly the PAC code wouldn't match so it wouldn't work and he should have told you at the time, I expect that he'll not be dealing with the port himself, instead he'll be passing it to a back office team who will be dealing with the request and you wont get a text message until they process the request which is why you haven't had a text message yet, but I expect when you do get a message it'll be to your temporary Tesco number.0 -
Hi,
When i ported my mobile number from o2. I rang tesco customer services who took the pac code plus the o2 mobile number i wanted to keep and he then gave me a date that it would transfer over on and that i had to switch my phone off from 8am to 4pm.
I did receive a text confirming the transfer date but this was sent to my temporary tesco mobile number.
On the transfer day my o2 signal went off around 1pm but my tesco sim did not come on till 4.10pm0
