Yes if you are not using mobile data its free but make sure mobile data is off . I made the mistake a few months ago and it cost a tenner for an hour as i had gone over cap .

If you are viewing you internet usage off your iPhone, i.e. settings > general > usage ... it isn't always right. Check with your actual balance with your network provider. If that's the case then they are charging you too much usage to what you actually use.

The usage that shows on my account matches what my phone is telling me.

Last night I tested data usage if maps on journey home. Used about 8MB for entire journey taking about 20mins. I zoomed in and out a bit as i would if using it in area I didn't know, to try to simulate real use.

When I test loaded the location i was on on holiday, it used about 7MB to locate and then zoom in and out to get bearings. So I accept 7 or 8MB of data usage when in emergency i turned data roaming on on holiday, but can't work out what the other 15MB I have been charged could have been used by. Network provider says they have no idea what other apps could have been synching in background when I switched data roaming on, but seriously, what app could have used an extra 15MB in the time it takes for a Map on the Maps app to load, because I definitely switched it straight off again.

I don't know what to do. Network provider is telling me nothing can be done, but can i ask them to prove my usage or something? because i don't accept responsibility for more than 8MB based upon my tests.

Also fact they don't warn how data hungry maps app is on their website when they give other examples of typical data usage makes me think they are just waiting for people to do this and then rub hands with glee when they send out huge bills. If I'd been in Europe charge would have been capped at £50 apparently but i wasn't so they're laughing all way to bank. But how can i prove i didn't use more than 8MB?
