Hello

I have been with British Gas for about 5 months, now they are putting up prices i have been looking around for another company.

Npower Sign online looks the best, but is tied in until 31st Dec 2011. We use about £30 Electric and £25 gas on average per month, the units seem cheaper compared to British Gas

I am with British Gas Online Saver2, would i need to pay a termination fee?

Would this npower tarrif be good?

Did you use one of the comparison sites like uswitch? They are pretty accurate and will tell you which is the cheapest for you. Most of the cheaper deals have lock in periods now. When you have chosen be sure to check one of the cashback sites.. I use Quidco.. to order through and get some cashback too.
  • The thing is, i dont think i have been with an energy company long enough since i moved into my current place... So i cant say an average annual fee...

looking at the costs of tier 1 and 2 npower (electric) are about 7p cheaper on tier 1 and 1p on tier 2
gas is 1p cheaper on tier 1 and 2.

But, is it wise being tied in for a year?

If you leave within the year there is a fine for going but that fee is usually less than the extra you'd pay if you just went on the standard rate. So yes, in my opinion it's worth it. I am changing to EDF and with the £100 present they give and the £80 cashback for going through Quidco, even if I leave early and pay the £60 let out fee it will have been worth it.

It's really difficult to work out the charges yourself as they vary so much with the tier 1 covering different amounts from each supplier and some having a standing charge instead. Just make a rough estimate of use or let the comparison site guess for you. It will give a good indication anyway.

Before you leap I would suggest an npower search on this site before you make your decision ;)

I'm also on British Gas's Online Saver2 and thinking about switching to Npower as the comparison sites say it has the cheapest options for me.

The comparison sites are still using BG's current prices right, not the higher ones (ie: the comparison is between BG pre-raise vs npower pre-raise)?
So even if npower raises their prices, they should still be lower than what I would be paying with BG.

How do you know Npower are going to rise by the same?

Indeed :p British Gas are not be perfect but in this case the phrase out of the frying pan and into the fire comes to mind - and you say you'll be tied into that fire too? ;)
