bad news but worse if they have to close and from the stories I have seen that could happen as they are loosing so much money. it hasnt been the same since a major airline, cant remember which pulled out.

If you booked before a certain time - think it is 1 November, but check the airport website - take proof of this with you and you will not have to pay the fee. The fee might narrow the losses in the short term, but is only going to push more passengers to Newcastle and Leeds Bradford.

Thomson will continue to operate from the airport and it hasn't pushed Ryanair out either which is a surprise

Think we may see more of this from smaller regional airports. Whatever they call it "Airport Development Fee" or "Passenger Facility Fee", its a blatant attempt to plug holes in the finances of a struggling airport.

DTV joins Blackpool, Norwich and Newquay. Running airports is massively expensive, and in the world of low fares and low cost airlines it seems the airlines will not stand for landing fee increases - they'll just go up the road to the nearest competitior. The airports can't meet their overheads and are now billing passengers for priviledge of walking through the door!

Very tough times ahead for some of our regional airports. Coventry flirted with airline services, it failed, and bankrupted the place such that it closed. Now back open going after a totally different niche market than 737s. Manston had a fairly large operation a few years back, it didn't last long, although Manston still survives wthout an airline. I hear things at Blackpool are very grim indeed with regards to airline services.

Places like Newquay will survive, due to lack of competition, but there are places in the country where runways are quite abundant and the bigger, established airports simply have the economies of scale where the smaller places dont.
