I'll try to keep this short
I'm with O2 and due an upgrade. I want the HTC Desire Z which O2 don't offer.
You can get an HTC Desire Z with an O2 contract elsewhere on the internet, but you cannot keep the same number as you cannot transfer from the same network.
Is it possible to upgrade, say to the Galaxy S, sell this phone on ebay and then buy the HTC Desire Z with the proceeds?
I've heard there may be a problem with registering the IMEI...
Cheers

Theres a small loop hole.
Transfer your number onto say Virgin takes 2 working days then the next day of transfer say you want a PAC again then transfer it back to o2 another 2 working days. But you got a contract on a network you want with the phone you want.
If Virgin ask why you're leaving just give them some thing like you wanted to stay but your companies paying for a contract so you cannot say no to free line rental lol
I've done this soo many times its untrue so I know it works lol0 -

I sort of get this but, and don't shout at me, doesn't this involve taking out a contract with another company? Please explain slowly...0 -
O2 are quite lenient. They will transfer your number to another O2 account without going through a different Pay and Go.
Alternatively, The third party can also process the sale as an upgrade on your existing account which will not only transfer your number but be cheaper for you. You may find they are reluctant to do this, as it means less commission for them.0
