Has anyone managed to keep a contract but change the mobile number?

One of our employees wants to take his mobile number with him when he leaves (it was his before he joined). We want to keep the contract running and keep the handset. We have been told that it can't be done because the contract follows the number so we would have to pay an exorbitant termination fee to allow him to do this.
Essentially we want to maintain the status quo - keep the contract and continue to pay the monthly fee. I have asked if they could terminate the contract on the old number and then immediately open up a new contract on a new number and not charge us a termination fee as we are a good and expanding client and we do want to continue to give them money - but they will not help us out.
Has anyone managed to negotiate around this problem? If so, please can someone give me some advice as to how to go about it?
All help gratefully received.

Unless someone knows of a super secret loop hole that allows this to be done. You've been given the correct information on this.
The contract does indeed follow the mobile number.
Sorry I've not been anymore helpful than this.0 -
The number porting system in this country is designed to close the account when you port a number out.
I can't think of any way around this. For this, and other, reasons many companies have a no personal numbers and no personal calls on company phones.0 -
Once a number ports out the acc is closed. There is no way around that, sorry, it the way the system is setup to work and I'm not aware of anyway round it...0

Thanks for the replies. I understand the reasons for this system, but wondered whether any customer-friendly mobile phone provider would work out another way of getting round this...obviously not0

Can you just have another handset added to the acc before the number ports out? Then the acc will still be live with the second phone on it ?0
