Almost opposite London eye you will be Cleopatra's Needle on the embankment. Behind that there is a lovely little cafe in a park. The food is reasonable and traditional English. I would also recommend you take a look round China town near Leicester Square and I can also recommend the London Aquarium.

I have been on a few weekend tourist trips to London - unfortunately I cannot recommend where to eat, but with regards to things to do I have done every single tourist-y thing and for me the best one was the London Eye !!

I would also recommend going on one of the london tour buses - although they cost about £15 each they last for 24 hours (could save you 2 days of underground tickets at about £5 per day - need to get your timing right when purchasing ticket !!) and some also come with a free Thames boat cruise which is really good.
  • If you like Italian, I would recommend Rusticana in Soho on Firth Street. Or a pricey one called Little Italy.

About sights to see, have look at British Library which is close to Kings Cross - They usually have some exhibition showing.

I would also recommend the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition which would be showing when you are in London at the History Museum.

aquarium is next to the eye too, so easy to get to...particually as youre trying to cram.
if it's more than 10 stone, and that hairy, it's probably not a dog...it may be a wookie.
  • I enjoyed the Dali museum, right next to the london eye, but i can't see it being a 15 year old's cup of tea. For good prices for eating in good places, try looking on lastminute.com.

My gf booked a meal in Maxwells (covent garden) and a show (the producers) for only 17.50 each through that site.
  • Being an ex-Londoner and a regular "tourist" to London. Here are my recommendations for those on a budget!

    - Places to Eat

    - Italian - Strada is a must... it is reasonably priced and has very nice pizzas and italian food done in a clay oven. There is one in Holborn/Farringdon which is within walking distance of Kings X. Here is the website to look up exact locations.

    - Thai - Thai Square in Trafalger is a good shout. A bit pricey (£20/head) but nice for those of who like Thai Food.

    - Indian - Go to Chowki by the Trocadero (Picaddilly Circus) (£15/head) or Handi (Knightsbridge) (£25/head)

    - Chinese - Hakassan - but be warned this is a very "in" restaurant and the prices are high - you will be looking at £40/head atleast for a good meal. Plus I would recommend a resevation if you were to go there.

    - Japanese - Wagamamas - reasonable, quick and not bad food like all the chains in the UK.

    What to go see

    - For the 15 year old. If he is into video games take him to the Trocadero Piccadilly Circus or there is Sega World (smaller scale) next to McDs by London Eye.

    - The Science Museum

    - Covent Garden

If you have any particular interests, reply and I'll rack my brain of where to go :)
  • Pop into the Tate Modern which is a lovely stroll along the South Bank from the Eye. It's free and the current exhibit in the main Turbine Hall is a huge slide that you can actually slide down! I plan to go myself next week.

Just back from a similar weekend myself! We had a pre theatre meal in the Savoy banquette restaurant which you don't dress up for - 2 courses for £15 or 3 for £18, not very cheap and portions not huge, I admit, but food lovely ( puddings especially). We didn't feel like country bumpkins at all despite going in with our backpacks ( we were on our way home that evening! ) But best bit was where the restaurant is - overlooking the entrance and we were gawping at the procession of taxis pulling up with beautifully dressed people getting in and out all evening. We couldn't have bought that experience anywhere else without feeling very out of place. We booked this by phoning up( couldn't find any offers for it)- telephone on this website http://www.gordonramsay.com/banquette/
I don't know what time you are going home on the Sunday, but if you are getting a late train you could go to the comedy store ( it finished around 10pm) We couldn't find a lot to go to see on Sunday night then someone on here recommended his, Paul Merton etc do an improvisation show and it was suberb, we didn't stop laughing all night. It should be fine for a 15 year old ( there was a little swearing and some mild adult content though so it would depend on how you felt as a family about it, but think along the lines of Have I got News for You to have an idea of type of content ). They also sold burgers etc at the bar there and people were eating it watching the show, we thought it looked nice enough and we'd wished we had gone there for our meal that evening instead of covent garden.

By the way voguemonkey 's post - "Pop into the Tate Modern which is a lovely stroll along the South Bank from the Eye. It's free and the current exhibit in the main Turbine Hall is a huge slide that you can actually slide down! I plan to go myself next week." It did look great fun but be warned queues were astronomicaly huge !

If you are good at getting up in the morning, and you like shopping, take
the tube to Finsbury Park, and turn right into Fonthill road. There are loads
of ladies manufactueres shops that open their doors to the public from 9 till
1pm Saturdays only. Dresses from £10, blouses from £5, which retail in the
big stores for £60+ and £30+. Take cash. Don't take your husband and son-unless they are Arsenal fans-the stadium is 5 minutes away. If you are lucky,
there might be a sale on. The money you save on the usual prices could
help to defray the cost of your weekend-0r that's how to sell the idea to the OH.
